Another day, another award for Joaquin Phoenix. As expected, the Joker actor won the Oscar for best actor. While accepting the award, he used the opportunity to discuss serious issues.
The director, Todd Phillips, gave an unexpected twist to Gotham City’s ultimate villain, Joker. Played by Joaquin Phoenix, Arthur Fleck is disregarded, isolated, beaten and completely rejected by the society. Such inhumane is the treatment that he descents into madness. Eventually, he emerges as the criminal mastermind, Joker. On one hand, you cannot help but sympathize with him, on the other, he is terrifying and scary. Joaquin Phoenix has given this character life and made it eternal.
While the audiences loved his performance, the critics and fellow actors also praised Joaquin Phoenix. Similarly, he was nominated for all the awards. From, BAFTA, to SAG, to Golden Globes, Joaquin Phoenix won them all. Not only that, he won his first-ever Oscar award at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Once again, he did not waste the opportunity and highlighted all the important issues. While talking, he got emotional and also remembered his late brother, River Phoenix. He expressed gratitude for his win and for the opportunity to work in films. Also, he said that this gives him a great opportunity to use his voice for the voiceless. He talked about the injustice towards animals, other genders, racism, and indigenous rights. Furthermore, he said:
I think that we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world and many of us, what we’re guilty of is an egocentric worldview — the belief that we’re the center of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow, and when she gives birth, we steal her baby. Even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.
Now, I have been — I’ve been a scoundrel in my life. I’ve been selfish, I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with. And I’m grateful [to] so many of you in this room [who] have given me a second chance and I think that’s when we’re at our best, when we support each other, not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption. That is the best of humanity.
Lastly, Joaquin Phoenix recited the lyrics written by his brother, River Phoenix.
