The la di die lyric ‘i’ll be dead at 27’ has a personal meaning to Nessa Barrett & Jaden Hossler

Published by

The new song ‘la di die’ has been making the rounds on the internet because of a number of reasons. First of all, it was very well received and it’s a pretty great song. Secondly, it was sung by Nessa Barrett and Jaden Hossler aka jxdn, famous TikTok stars. Thirdly, the singers are currently involved in a major drama as Nessa and Jaden started to officially date. There is drama because Jaden was the best friend of Nessa Barrett’s ex-boyfriend, Josh Richards. But we’re not here to talk about that. Today, we’re going to talk about the lyrics behind ‘la di die’, in particular, the ‘i’ll be dead at 27’.

La di die talks about the dark side of fame

We also need to talk about the whole song about ‘la di die’. It’s about how fame is portrayed as something beautiful but behind the scenes, it’s a dark reality for most artists. There is also a special focus on how most artists suffer from mental health issues, such as Nessa Barrett herself.

Will they love you when you’re famous?
Swear you’ll never be alone
Hope someday I’ll find nirvana

Then there’s the famous line ‘i’ll be dead at 27’:

I’ll be looking down below
I’ll be dead at twenty-seven
Only nine more years to go

There’s a 27 club that includes the most famous musicians that died at the young age of 27. The popular members of the club include Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. It’s a club I didn’t even know existed. But many say that it’s the most common age as the musicians are at the peak of their fame, and it gets to them. The fame’s dark side becomes overwhelming and most musicians end up suffering from multiple mental health issues and often cope with drugs, leading to fatal consequences. Plus, the line of ‘hope someday i’ll find nirvana’ is an ode to Kurt Cobain’s band, Nirvana. Cobain died from suicide at the age of 27. Others in the 27 Club have also died from a drug overdose.

Does it rain in California
Where the angels cry for me?
Want the drugs that taste like candy
And blood diamonds in my teeth
Ah

For Nessa Barrett, death at 27 could come from the immense pressure she has to deal with when gaining fame at such a young age. The la di die lyrics continue from a perspective of a musician who is no longer alive:

I was broken when you left
Now you hear me everywhere you go

Nessa Barrett also taps into her inner demons and truly speaks on what her soul is feeling. She says ‘loving her’ is ‘suicide’ meaning that she thinks it’s difficult to love someone like her. She can only be the perfect version while she’s on ‘the radio’ and singing, being her true self.

La da di, oh la di da
Gonna be a superstar
Be the girl you used to know
Playing on the radio
La da di, oh la di die
Loving me is suicide
I’m a dreamer, I’m on fire
La da di, run for your life

Nessa Barrett suffers from a bipolar disorder

The young singer has always been open about her mental health, and she’s revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder.

And eerily enough, for people who suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder, the average age of death is 27. There are reported cases of early mortality rate in BPD patients. Moreover, those who do not actively seek treatment and recover from the disorder end up at a higher risk, as per the McLean Study. The mortality rate of Bipolar Disorder is 75.

Suicide is also common for those suffering from bipolar disorder (BD). It’s one of the main causes of death at early ages for people with Bipolar Disorder.

One of the contributors for the decreased life expectancy in BD is suicide. Accordingly, the rate of suicide among BD patients is approximately 10–30 times higher than the corresponding rate in the general population. Extant research found that up to 20% of (mostly untreated) BD subjects end their life by suicide, and 20–60% of them attempt suicide at least one in their lifetime.

And Barrett herself attempted to take her own life a few years ago. The singer talked about her suicide attempt in her song ‘911’. She’s also opened up about her struggles and how bullying from millions of people can have drastic effects on someone’s mental state:

A lot of creators are human and have real struggles. When they just see us as a person on screen, they don’t really care about our feelings, which I feel like a lot of people have to take that into account.

Meanwhile, Jaden Hossler also suffers from depression

The connection that Jaden and Nessa had, apart from loving music together, is probably that they can relate to one another. Jaden Hossler has also opened up about his own depression and how he would ‘pray to die in his sleep’.

“I just want people to understand that everyone goes through it, and we need to stop isolating people because either they’re struggling or they don’t know what to do. That’s not how you go about it. We’ve got to love people to change,” Hossler shared.

His song ‘Pray’ was about his plea for help while going through a severe depression. Hossler wanted to showcase what depression and suicide is actually like and he also added resources for people to find help. Suicide is also common for people suffering from depression.

Kind of giving them a song to unify everybody together and also giving them some real information at the end of the video to give them steps if they need help or if they need people to talk to,

In ‘la die die’, Jaden Hossler also mentioned his struggle with depression:

My depression and misconceptions
And all the mistakes that lead to lessons
My depression, it makes me question
My depression, it makes me question

Jaden Hossler also created the 28 Club, a venture which he created to spread hope and positivity for those struggling with mental health issues. He told Hollywood Fix about it:

We’re just trying to break these standards that society likes to put on a lot of people you know. I think we just wanted to let people know whatever number it is 28. You know whatever it is just be who you are be what you want to be and be secure in yourself now

So, there you have it. The meaning behind the ‘i’ll be dead at 27’ lyrics.
