Supergirl has some super news to share with her fans! In an Instagram post, Melissa Benoist announced that she is expecting her first child with co-star Chris Wood. The couple has been dating for 3 years and got engaged last year. They announced their marriage in November 2019.
The announcement
The actress said on Instagram:
A non-canine child is coming to our family very soon!!! 😱😆😭 @christophrwood has always been an old dad by nature but now he’s going to be a real one!
The photo featured the couple with their two pet dogs, and Melissa holding a teeny tiny cute baby shirt. Chris Wood posted a hilarious photo on his own Insta, confirming the announcement:
The actor re-affirmed that:
The photo is a joke but the news is real…!!! 👶🏻🍼🤗
It is currently unclear how the pregnancy will affect the fifth season’s ongoing shooting.
Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood’s relationship:
Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood met for the first time on the set of ‘Supergirl‘ in 2016. They had an intimate relationship on-screen for two seasons. Obviously, that could have led to a personal relationship between them. They officially began dating in 2017. However, even after the departure of Chris’ character Mon-El in Season 3, the couple remained close as ever. The couple got engaged in February 2019 and married in September.
Melissa’s domestic violence experience
Fans have congratulated Melissa Benoist on her first child. But, this is not her first marriage. She was previously married to Glee co-star Blake Jenner. They got married in 2015, although some say they got married at their engagement in 2013. Benoist suffered from an accident in 2015 that caused one eye to be permanently enlarged. Admittedly, the accident happened because she tripped down the stairs.
In an Instagram video last year, she talked about her experience with domestic abuse and violence. Particularly, she mentioned the accident which disfigured her eye for life. Without pointing fingers, Melissa Benoist said that a “partner” actually threw an iPhone at her which caused that accident. Both she and Wood have been vocal about mental illnesses and domestic abuse.
