At the time, after news broke out that Piers Morgan was fired, he tweeted his sentiments. Morgan then defended his comments saying he’s willing to die on the hill of defending his right to freedom of speech. Furthermore, he shared a quote by Winston Churchill, which criticized people who retaliate to disagreement with outrage. His tweet read:

On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.

Later on, Piers Morgan also talked to Sky News on Wednesday morning, where he had this to say about his comments regarding Meghan Markle:

I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible. If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly-held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out within that interview, so be it. I think it’s fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they’ve canceled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.

The comments that caused the outrage

On Monday’s episode of ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Piers Morgan went on a tirade against Meghan Markle, after her recent interview with Oprah Winfrey. He claimed that she was a liar and belittled her claims of her deteriorating mental health. Morgan said:

Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.

As a result, 40,000 complaints came from viewers all around the UK, including mental health charities. The next day, Piers Morgan continued to talk against Markle with great passion, after which the ITV executives had a chat with Morgan and he later handed his resignation.
