Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical ‘The Prom’, is eyeing big names to grace its stellar ensemble. Murphy has reportedly cast acclaimed actresses, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, to star in his film. Thus, the Prom would mark the second union of Streep and Kidman. The actresses currently play a mother-in-law daughter-in-law duo on HBO’s hit drama series Big Little Lies Season 2. The film adaptation of The Prom, which will premiere on Netflix, will also feature Awkwafina, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells alongside Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman. The film had also earlier tapped on Ariana Granda as one of its leads. But now, it appears that Grande would no more topline the project. The Prom will explore an original concept by Jack Viertel and a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin. It follows the life of an Indiana homosexual teenager who is eager to bring her girlfriend to the school dance. Instead, her school bans her. The events subsequently prompt an assembly of Broadway eccentrics to rally together and descend down to the aid of the girl in her small home-town. Ryan Murphy’s The Prom will see Meryl Streep and James Corden share screen as Broadway co-stars. While Streep will play two-time Tony winner Dee Dee Allen, Corden will reprise the part of Barry Glickman. Allen and Glickman’s back story includes The New York Times bashing their Eleanor Roosevelt bio-musical. Hence, to salvage their reputation, the duo takes up a social cause. Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells’ characters will also join the musical duo’s initiative. Rannells will depict the role of Trent Oliver- an actor down on his luck, while Nicole Kidman will play Angie Dickinson, a veteran chorus girl. Keegan-Michael Key, on the other hand, will play a principal. Key’s character will probably romance Streep’s Dee Dee Allen in the movie. Crazy Rich Asians’ Awkwafina will play Ms Sheldon, a publicist.
Earlier, the news of Ariana Grande starring in Ryan Murphy’s The Prom adaptation broke out. But the project will now seemingly go forward without Ariana, as she remains unavailable to sign the dotted. line due to the extension of her Sweetener tour. Ariana would have played the protagonist Emma’s closeted girlfriend, as well as help, produce the film’s music.
