Nicole Kidman’s Marriage With Tom Cruise Protected Her

There is an another addition to the list of #MeToo victims who never liked speaking up about it publicly. Nicole Kidman, the Moulin Rouge actress has suffered some #MeToo moments even when we might not ever heard of them. But she believes that getting married to Tom Cruise protected her from any further sexual harassment. Ever since Tom Cruise filed for divorce from Nicole Kidman, she has not been vocal about her relationship. However, now she is ready to open about her marriage and also, for the immense role that it played during her life. Does a woman in Hollywood really need to get married to a powerful actor to keep herself secure from sexual harassment?

How Did Tom Cruise Protect Nicole Kidman?

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise got married on Christmas Eve in 1990. The couple met on the sets of movie Days of Thunder in 1989. And only a year later they confirmed their marriage to the world. Over the course of their 10-year relationship, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman adopted two children- Isabella Jane in 1992 and Connor Antony in 1995. However, things did not go that well all along. In 2001, Tom Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman. Following their divorce, Nicole Kidman refused to comment or discuss her marriage. Apparently, she feels that talking about it is disrespectful to the man she has married and truly loves now- Keith Urban.

However, now the actress is ready to acknowledge the benefit she got out of her marriage to Tom Cruise. In an essay for the New York’s magazine women and power series, Nicole Kidman said that she got married very young. She was only 22, but the marriage did not give her a lot of power. But instead, it was protection for her. Nicole Kidman said that she married him for love. But her marriage to a very powerful man protected her from sexual harassment. She also admitted that after her divorce, she had to grow up a lot.

Further, Nicole Kidman claimed that despite Tom Cruise protecting her from sexual harassment in the early stages of her career, she has experienced #MeToo moments later. But she was not in favor of disclosing her harassers and experiences in an article. She also said that they came out in her work.

#MeToo might be going strong in Hollywood. But let’s emphasize that a woman should never feel the need to get married in order to protect herself.
