Amidst the global shutdown because of Coronavirus, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive challenge is going viral. The washing hands challenge is to encourage people to take care of their personal hygiene.

Although she started singing in the 1960s, Gloria Gaynor’s success came in 1973

When she signed the contract with Columbus Records, it seemed that it would bring her success and fame. However, it resulted in a flop single called ‘Honey Bee’. After that, she moved on to MGM Records and recorded her first hit album, ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’. Needless to say, this album was unique and innovative. The first side of it consisted of a 19-minute dance marathon which was a big hit in the dance clubs. Thus began Gloria Gaynor’s success story.

In 1978, her single, ‘I Will Survive’, became a sensational hit all over the world.

Seemingly, the lyrics of the song are written from a woman’s point of view who is dumped and is addressing her former lover. She seems to be telling him that she does not need anyone to survive. It must be a bold choice on Gloria Gaynor’s part to release such a song in that era. The song topped charts and became a smashing hit. Interestingly, the song has once again become a talking point because of Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive challenge.

After 41 years, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive is again doing rounds on the internet

In a TikTok video, the singer is seen washing hands while her song, I Will Survive is playing in the background. In the caption of the video, she wrote:

“It only takes 20 seconds to ‘SURVIVE!'”

Since then, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive challenge has been trending on the internet with the hashtag of the song. It aims in teaching people to wash hands according to WHO’s guidelines which are to wash for 20 seconds. Her challenge has helped educate more people about their personal hygiene.
