For Millennials. By Millennials.
A lthough it is officially the Black History Month, is Super Bowl 2019 consistent with this concept? Well, to an extent yes. The tournament will take place in Atlanta- a city popluar for its black colleges and other related architecture. But even then, the Half Time Show at Super Bowl is being slammed by a lot many people. Apart from all the other reasons behind it, one remains that it is predominantly white. And arguing with that could be pretty tough because Donnie Wahlberg has actually listed some things that suggest so. Although the Half Time performance came from black rappers like Travis Scott as well, something racist is still there. Isn’t it true? Looks like Superbowl this year is having a rough time already. And to top it off, disgraced NFL star Colin Kaepernick is stealing focus!
Why has Donnie Wahlberg Slammed the Super Bowl 2019 Half Time Show?
Donnie Wahlberg has criticized the Super Bowl 2019 Half Time Show for being predominantly racist. Like all other things, apparently its promoting white culture too. But that’s not the ironic part. In fact, what needs attention here is that all this is happening when the country is supposed to be observing the Black History Month.
In a tweet that was later shared on his Instagram, Wahlberg pointed out how the Halftime performance does not align with other actions the Super Bowl are taking this year. The tournament is being held in Atlanta which is home to multiple historic black colleges. The Super Bowl started on Janet Jackson’s Appreciation Day. And for those who are missing what this day is, Janet Jackson was a black singer who performed at Superbowl 2004 Half Time along with Justin Timberlake. Timberlake exposed Janet’s breasts during the performance leading to her getting blacklisted while Timberlake performed again in 2014. Fans have now been celebrating Janet Jackson Appreciation Day to honor the disgraced singer and show solidarity for second year in a row.
Despite the Super Bowl Sunday being on Janet Jackson Appreciation Day, and the tournament being in Atlanta, the halftime performance disappointed many fans. And that’s because it was a white headline act with the white marching band, not to mention featuring a white man’s nipples. The drumline during Maroon 5 and Travis Scott’s performance was also majorly white. Donnie Wahlberg has pointed all this out, expressing his disbelief at the irony.
How are People Reacting to Super Bowl 2019 Half-Time Performance Being Predominantly White?
Needless to say, fans are not really happy with the choices of Super Bowl organizers. This year wasn’t already great with people showing support to Colin Kaepernick who wasn’t allowed to play because he stood up for racial injustice. Moreover, white people dominated the whole performance. People took to Twitter to showcase their disappointment.
Moreover, people are accusing Adam Levine- the Maroon 5 frontman for showcasing his nipples on the show. After all, Janet Jackson was banned and heavily fined due to the same reason. Levine’s nipples have been on stage and much prominently displayed for a longer time.
And that initiated the controversy about whether it was okay for a ‘white man’ to do that?
Donnie Wahlberg is an American singer and songwriter who is also a founding member of the boy band New Kids on the Block. His most prominent albums include The Block, Step by Step and The Redemption. Though, a lot of people recognize him as Mark Wahlberg’s brother.
