Last Wednesday, FX’s brilliant Vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows unexpectedly ended up being an epic vampire reunion. Escaping TV’s recent comedy bloodbath, the FX satire celebrated its renewal glaringly, in its own, unique, grim-gothic tone. It featured the original cast from its film version, including Taika Waititi, Jonny Brugh, and Jemaine Clement. And it also went on to star several other celebrated actors as the gruesome members of the Vampiric Council. Here is a list of every single cameo from last week’s episode.
Shadows’ Global Vampiric Council found its spokeswoman in comedian and voice actress, Kristen Schaal. The charming, airborne envoy, who simply introduced herself as ‘The Guide’, spoke in a shrill, demonic voice.
Next up in the row was WWE Champion David Michael Bautista, or simply ‘Batista’. Paired alongside Alexandra Henrikson’s Vasilisa the Defiler, Batista’s Garrett was a prisoner, whom the leads mistook to be a member of the Chief Vampiric Council. Garrett gave hope to the main trio when ironically he had been framed for a crime committed by Laszlo.
As the trio stepped forward into the Vampiric Council, they were greeted by yet another roster of starry cameos. They were predominantly members of the Council itself, which was in turn led by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton.
The council also included stars from the series’ source film, Taika Waititi, Jonny Brugh, and Jemaine Clement, who reprise their roles as Viago Von Dorna Schmarten Scheden Heimburg, Deacon Brucke, and Vladislav the Poker on the show. The three Vampires had traveled all the way from New Zealand to attend the trial of their television counterparts, or to simply make their state-of-Bardo hell.
Westworld Star Evan Rachel Wood also graced last week’s episode. She was Evan- the Immortal Princess of the Undead- who, of course, goes by her first name. The Council had a palpable sense of diversity as there was also a Hispanic tattooed vampire, Danny, played by none other than the Spy Kids star, Danny Trejo.
There was also Pee-Wee’s Playhouse star, Paul Reubens, whom the mockumentary featured as the notorious Paul. Geographic restrictions and other physical limitations had made it difficult for all Vampires around the world to be in one place. But, thanks to Skype, daywalker Wesley (Wesley Snipes) did not have to give the meeting a miss, much to the dismay of Danny who despised the presence of a Vampire hunter in the Council. FX’s unorthodox mockumentary paradigm will return for another season of deadpan humor and jaw-dropping shenanigans sometime next year. There are three more episodes to go before the first season concludes its surreal hi-jinks. The next episode ‘Citizenship’, airs Wednesday at 10.p.m.
