The Beatles Sandwich: Made Of The Beatles Themselves

When you hear The Beatles Sandwich, it sounds like a special sandwich from a restaurant in Liverpool. But in reality, it’s not made of cheese, onions, ham, bread, tomatoes, or any other condiment. It was made of The Beatles themselves!

It was a cold winter in 1963

On January 21, 1963, The Beatles had to go to London after an interview with The Daily Mail. However, it was the middle of January, and London’s notorious fog was upon them. Moreover, the windscreen cracked, making the situation even direr for the Fab Four. This is when they had to fight for their survival, and the solution was a bit unorthodox – A Beatles Sandwich! But, it wasn’t a magical sandwich with food that would keep them warm. In fact, it was The Beatles, literally sandwiched on top of each other, while drinking whiskey! Paul McCartney gave it this name in The Beatles Anthology series.

“The Beatles Sandwich”

In an interview with GQ, after talking about masturb*ting with John Lennon and watching George Harrison’s virginity, Paul McCartney recalls how these events made the Beatles closer. And then mentions about the infamous Beatles Sandwich:

So big, yeah. In music, it made us (The Beatles) a very tight band, but as friends it made us able to read each other. When we were super close…examples being, like, going down the motorway and the van had no air-conditioning and it was bitter, in the middle of winter, and we lay on top of each other, literally. It was the only way we could stay warm. We suffered for a while, just shivering, and then someone said: Well, why don’t we…? So we did a Beatles sandwich.

However, after talking about it, Paul McCartney started to doubt his memory, thinking if it really happened?

I don’t know, it would be lovely if I remembered. It warmed us. It was a good idea. But, you know, as I say that story, I question it: Is that just one of my stories? But then…did I meet Elvis Presley? Yes, I did! But my mind is sort of going: Really

With stories like The Beatles Sandwich, boxing the one-eyed champ together, and seeing each other lose their virginity, it’s insane how close the band really was. Paul recalls that it made the band closer to each other:

I mean, I think in the end this was one of the strengths of the Beatles, this enforced closeness which I always liken to army buddies. Because you’re all in the same barracks. We were always very close and on top of each other, which meant you could totally read each other.
