Despite openly admitting that she would never join social media, Jennifer Lawrence has broken her own rule. Recently, she joined Twitter to demand justice for Breonna Taylor.
It is a known fact that Hollywood celebrities thrive on the number of followers on Instagram and Twitter. However, there are some who do not wish to join in this race. Among them is the star of X-Men and The Hunger Games films. While Jennifer Lawrence has made a name for herself in the films, her fans cannot even peek inside her private life. While talking about it, she said:
“There is always so much backlash. So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything. I really don’t want to welcome that unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want to put myself out there for no reason. Unless I’m promoting something or something really burns my onions, you won’t hear from me.”
Three months ago, an African-American medical technician, Breonna Taylor, was shot eight times. While she and her boyfriend were at home, officers of Louisville police entered their apartment with a no-knock search warrant. When Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend thought that plainclothes officers were intruders, he shot at them. In response, the officers shot back and killed Breonna. Despite this execution, the officers are still on-duty and have faced no consequences. In order to demand justice for Breonna Taylor many celebrities, activists, and protesters have started campaigns online. Similarly, Jennifer Lawrence joined Twitter to speak up about this issue. In a tweet, she said:
“For three months since her murder, Breonna Taylor’s family, the people of Louisville, Americans across the country, and many around the world have called out for justice. And yet, those calls have gone unanswered. No arrests have been made, the officers responsible for her death remain employed by the LMPD, and disturbingly, the LMPD’s own investigation report was woefully inaccurate. As a Louisvillian, as a human being, I cannot be silent.”
Furthermore, Jennifer Lawrence demanded the culprits be held responsible and said:
“We must not allow the erasure of Black women to continue in America. As many activists and leaders have been imporing for years: #SayHerName.”
It is applaudable to see celebrities taking serious steps in such causes.
