Billie Eilish ‘can’t win’ against Instagram trolls

Billie Eilish has just had enough of body shamers and haters. The 18-year-old has tried to address this issue time and time again. However, she soon realized people will troll her whether she wears oversized T-shirts or tank tops. Billie Eilish recently made waves on Twitter for ‘showing skin’ in a video, which made fans go crazy.

We all realize social media has basically allowed anonymous people to comment on anyone. However, celebrities are often the harshest victims of cyberbullying. People follow each and every second of their life, judge every outfit and criticize every decision. Billie Eilish has been dealing with haters since she was 16 years old. A teenage female with dyed hair and strange outfits is a troll’s perfect victim.

Billie Eilish recently shared a video of her Hawaii vacation in which she wore a bikini. She talked about the backlash in a recent interview:

There were comments like, ‘I don’t like her anymore because as soon as she turns 18 she’s a whore’. [When I wore a tank top] I saw comments like, ‘How dare she talk about not wanting to be sexualised and wear this?!’

I just cannot win.

Billie Eilish went on to say she doesn’t even recognize her body anymore.

Body shaming female artists is an issue:

Billie Eilish kicked off her world tour in Miami last March. However, she kicked off her song ‘Unexpectedly bury a Friend’. A pre-recorded video showed Eilish taking her shirt off and sinking into a black tar pool. She said in a monologue:

Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me. If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why?

Billie was popular for her ‘total lack of sexualization‘ before she turned 18. Body shamers either roasted her dressing style or praised her for ‘teaching sluts how to dress’. Meanwhile, sensational headlines like the Daily Mail’s “Billie Eilish shows some skin in a rare public display” also hurt. We need raise awareness of this issue and how we comment on celebrities’ lifestyle.
