Although the world now knows him as an incredible solo artist, Harry Styles started off just like the rest of us and auditioned for X Factor to get to where he is now. Now that he’s a world-famous pop star, there are a lot of facts about his past that most of you don’t know. Keep on reading to find out what makes Harry, Harry Styles.
Harry Edward Styles was born on Feb. 1, 1994, in Worcestershire, to Anne Cox and Desmond Styles. His older sister Gemma was born in 1990.
In the 1D biography Dare to Dream, Harry recalled crying—not a normal occurrence for him—when his parents told a 7-year-old Harry that they were splitting up.
“I guess I didn’t really get what was going on properly, I was just sad that my parents wouldn’t be together anymore,” he said.
After being together for over a decade, best man Harry walked his mom down the aisle as she married Robin Twist in 2013.
Harry would earn £6 an hour while working at W. Mandeville bakery.
“He was the most polite member of staff we’ve ever had,” his former boss, Simon Wakefield, told the Mirror in 2013 when Styles returned to the shop to shoot scenes for One Direction: This Is Us. “Customers really took a shine to him.”
Anne was the one who ended up sending Harry’s X Factor application when he didn’t believe in himself enough to do it.
“People tell me I’m a good singer. It’s normally my mum,” the 16-year-old said, already the charmer, when he auditioned for The X Factor in the spring of 2010, performing Stevie Wonders‘ “Isn’t She Lovely” a cappella. “Singing is what I want to do and if people who can make that happen for me think I shouldn’t be doing that, then it’s a major setback in my plans.”
In October 2010, One Direction hit the X Factor stage live for the first time.
“I know I’m his mum, but he really is a lovely young man and he’s coming across exactly as he is at home,” Anne praised Harry to Now during his run on the show.
Once the live shows began, Harry started having panic attacks before going on stage. He then turned to drinking a sparkling mineral water and breathing exercises to calm him down.
One Direction didn’t actually win The X Factor in December 2010. In fact, they came in third. But that did little to bring them down.
His White Eskimo bandmate Will Sweeny told the Daily Star, “I know it sounds funny but, even in primary school, he had a few girls on the go. It was rather amusing. From Year Four, when he was about 10, Harry started with proper girlfriends. He just had this unbelievable way with girls all his life.”
The band has been on hiatus since 2016 and since then Harry has been busy acting, touring, and becoming a fashion icon.
Since embarking on a solo career, Styles released two successful albums, toured the world, acted in an Oscar-winning film, and co-chaired the 2019 Met Gala.
In 2017, Harry made his big-screen debut in Dunkirk, a war drama. The film took home three Oscars and starred Fionn Whitehead and Tom Hardy, among others.
Styles co-wrote “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart” specifically for Ariana Grande to perform.
In 2014, Grande told MTV she “was like crying” the first time she heard the song. The ballad is on Grande’s album “My Everything.”
Styles also co-wrote the romantic ballad “Someday Maybe” with Meghan Trainor and it appeared on Michael Bublé’s 2016 album.
Styles is known for his expansive suit collection, many of which are custom-made by Gucci.
Under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele, Gucci brought Styles on for a high-fashion campaign in 2018.
The campaign was shot in North London and featured 1970s-inspired fashion.
Harry Styles likes snowboarding.
“We’re friends. He’s cool,” added Kendall at the 2013 American Music Awards that November.
Harry also likes swimming.
Such was the start of a years-long are-they-or-aren’t-they friendship that has taken Styles and Jenner everywhere from Southern California to Anguilla and St. Barts.
In 2014, it was Harry who suggested while they were in the studio in London (very Beatles-esque) that One Direction might want to take a break.
“I didn’t want to exhaust our fan base,” he told Rolling Stone. “If you’re shortsighted, you can think, ‘Let’s just keep touring,’ but we all thought too much of the group than to let that happen. You realize you’re exhausted and you don’t want to drain people’s belief in you.”
