The Mandalorian Giancarlo Esposito Broke Three Dark Sabers

The actor might be the fearsome Moff Gideon on screen, but it seems he could not use Darksaber properly on set. Giancarlo Esposito of The Mandalorian tells that he broke up to three Darksabers while filming for season 2. The show revealed the famous Darksaber as a final scene of the debut season finale of the Star Wars spin-off show. After Din Djarin tampers with Moff’s TIE fighter mid-air, the starfighter crashes, seemingly killing the Moff in the process. However, the final scene of the show revealed the Imperial commander walk out from a burning fighter and ZAPP! He lights up his Darksaber before the credits roll.

Giancarlo Esposito In The Mandalorian Season 2

The Star Wars fans are certainly anxious to see the famous Darksaber in action in season 2 of The Mandalorian. Till now, we have only seen it in the animated show Star Wars Rebels. However, there is a whole backstory attached to how Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) got the sword which was a symbol of the people of Mandalore.

Tarre Vizsla created the Darksaber over a thousand years ago, who was the first Mandalorian Jedi. Eventually, the Jedi returned to his home planet and took over as their leader, retaining the weapon until his death. After that, the Saber was placed in the Jedi Temple in Coruscant. Later, the Vizsla claim raided the temple to retrieve the Saber after which it remained in their hands. When Pre Vizsla was struck down by Darth Maul, he got his hands on it until Darth Sidious took him down. During Star Wars Rebels, the Mandalorian Sabine Wren took back the sword, giving it to Bo-Katan. He was the last character to have held the sword until Giancarlo Esposito’s character took it out in The Mandalorian.

Esposito revealed that he filmed some fight scenes which resulted in breaking three Darksabers during the process:

“I’m decent. I’m getting better. But you have to respect the power of it, the energy of it. It’s long, dude. I’ve bopped myself three times already. Pop in the head, I’m like oh my God, what do I do? I start laughing. People look at me, they want me to be the expert right off the bat, because I’m the bad ass. But you know what? It takes practice.”

It’s not a spoiler that we will get to see a lot of Giancarlo Esposito in The Mandalorian season 2. The way season 1 ended, he is certainly going to be the main figure in the story.
