When X-Files first came to Fox 26 years ago, little did it have an idea that future shows would use it as a TV template? The cultural touchstone engineered a rich and vast landscape for the genre by redefining the importance of Sci-Fi on TV. Even when it revisited TV after a 14-year-long hiatus through its 2016 revival, the show felt just as relevant as its earlier seasons. For years and years, the TV mammoth held the crown for the best Sci-Fi series to have ever aired. But now, after a mighty reign, the Chris Carter classic has been displaced. And that, too, by a show way more incognito. Amazon Prime Video’s latest Sci-Fi series, The Expanse, has dethroned X-Files and has assumed the title of the best Sci-Fi series to have ever happened. The Expanse Season 4
Through its Twitter handle, Amazon Prime Video recently announced a championship to decide upon a single fan-favorite Sci-Fi TV show. The tournament. which had its results governed by a system of online voting, involved four rounds and 16 participants. In each round, two entries were pitched against each other and were voted upon. Each winner would subsequently then compete against other winners. And this continued until only two contestants were left. The participants included the two parts of the Star Trek Series, The Expanse. The other choices were Battlestar Galactica, Farspace, Babylon 5, and X-Files.
X-Files and The Expanse both belonged to different blocks. Hence, in the final round, we saw the magnum opera competing against each other. Finally, in a dramatic turn of events, The Expanse emerged as a winner defeating X-Files by a margin of nearly 40% of the total votes.
The Expanse initially aired on SyFy. In May 2018, however, Syfy refused to renew the Expanse owing to restrictive distribution arrangements and eventually announced its cancellation. Fans protested the cancellation, gathering over 100,000 signatures for an online petition. They lobbied Amazon Studios and Netflix to pick the series up; a crowdfunding campaign paid for an airplane to fly a “#SaveTheExpanse” banner around Amazon Studios. Several celebrities, including Wil Wheaton, George R. R. Martin, Patton Oswalt, and Andreas Mogensen, also endorsed the campaign.
Subsequently, On May 26, at the International Space Development Conference, Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon Prime Video had picked the series up for a Season 4. Production for The Expanse Season 4 began in October and is expected to air sometime later this year.
The Expanse’s convincing design, its bold and unique cinematography, its precise characterization and its ability to tell politically thrilling narratives in a contemporary style have all introduced a new life and a relatable sense to a much-overlooked TV genre. The Expanse Season 4 will hopefully be an actual mascot and a determining game changer of Amazon’s video brand. Additionally, given the fans’ love continues, the series may also take home some Academy prestige.
