The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Season 3 Review

Published by

The long-awaited season finally came out earlier this week and provided binge-watchers with a sigh of relief. Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger as Nick Scratch imprisoned Lucifer within himself and Lilith being crowned as the Queen of Hell. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3 is back with our beloved characters. Sabrina and her group of friends, Aunties Zelda and Hilda, Father Blackwood, Ambrose, and Prudence, to name a few.

Sabrina Season 3 Non-Spoiler Review:

Without getting into any specifics and ruining the story, I’ll start off by a non-spoiler review. However, if you already watched the unexpected finale, skip right ahead for the details. Season 3 picks up right where the last one left off. The quirky relationship between the Spellman family continues and the relationships which we came to know had some serious developments.

The show portrays Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka), the teenage witch trying to balance high school, coven and hell all at the same time. The Church of Night now faces yet another threat in the absence of Lucifer. Full of melodrama and Latin spells and a (kind-of) crossover with Riverdale, this season won’t be disappointing for the Archie Comics’ fans. However, for the average watcher, this season feels just like the same-old episodes with no actual character development in most roles. With the exception of a few emotional scenes, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 3 is just an extension of the previous season, which may be good or bad depending on your taste. Sabrina feels like another variant of Netflix’s Riverdale.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina | Season 3 Spoiler Review:

So, let’s get right into the details. As Sabrina tries to restore balance to the cosmos and save The Church of Night; Season 3 brings back the melodrama we all yearned for. She manages to save Nick from the Acheron prism but perhaps it was too late to save his sanity. We also got to see the unlikely but interesting duo of Ambrose and Prudence which was probably my favorite part of the show. As the relationship between Sabrina and Nick degrades due to his PTSD and addictions, the lovebirds we saw last season have gone through a lot of character development. The witches of Church of Night face impending doom as they begin to lose powers due to Lucifer’s imprisonment and face the threat of Pagan witches.

I will say quite frankly that the threat of the Pagan witches was quite underwhelming. How Lucifer teased that “The old ones are coming” made me excited for an interesting foe for Sabrina and her coven. But sadly, the threat he posed was not up to the mark I had in my mind. The best part of the season was probably the evolution of the relationships: Sabrina & Nick, Harvey & Roz, Ambrose & Prudence, and the underrated Auntie Hilda and Dr. Cee. Another interesting duo which I would love to see develop next season is Aunt Zelda and Mambo Marie LaFleur. Coming to the finale, it was extremely disappointing to see yet another show using the gold ol’ time travel trick to get out of troubles. The finale wraps up most of the threats of Season 3, but not without an interesting cliffhanger.

Finale Ending Explained:

We see Father Blackwood finally performing the ritual interrupted earlier in Scotland by Ambrose and Prudence. He stabs the egg and invites the eldritch terrors to “tear through the skin of reality”. An interesting fact to add here is that a famous eldritch Cthulhu has appeared in the Sabrina comics. He might be the worthy opponent Sabrina shall be facing next season. With Sabrina Morningstar serving as Queen of Hell and Sabrina Spellman now with the Order of Hecate, let’s see what Season 4 will have in store for us.
