The Beatles and the Rolling Stones pretty much dominated the world in the 60s. And the media always pitted the two as rivals. Comparisons between the two are pretty much a norm even 5 decades later. However, Paul McCartney went one step further and accused them of copying the Beatles! He said that in an interview.
According to Paul, it’s pretty obvious that The Rolling Stones copied the Beatles. It was reported by Contactmusic that Paul said:
That is the truth. Look at the history: The Beatles go to America, a year later they come too.
Moreover, Paul McCartney hinted towards more copied trends:
We go psychedelic, they go psychedelic. We dress as wizards, they dress as wizards…
Going psychedelic was pointing at the Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request. Paul McCartney says that it released one year after the Beatles went psychedelic with Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Now, we have to agree that the coincidences are spooky, or maybe not coincidences at all?
This is almost common knowledge that The Rolling Stones owe one of their biggest hits to The Beatles. Both Paul and John Lennon wrote this song and gave it to The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger said in 1968:
We knew (the Beatles) by then and we were rehearsing and Andrew brought Paul (McCartney) and John down to the rehearsal. They said they had this tune, they were really hustlers then. I mean the way they used to hustle tunes was great: ‘Hey Mick, we’ve got this great song.’ So they played it and we thought it sounded pretty commercial
Moreover, even the album covers of Sgt. Pepper’s and Satanic Majesties was so similar. At this point, it seems like Paul McCartney did have a point! See for yourself:
The media loves to pit the two against each other, but in reality, they were very chill with each other. It has been widely reported that the two often shared songs with each other, and hung out as friends. Therefore, the rivalry mostly just resides in the minds of fans. That’s why fans can just be happy about enjoying amazing music from both the bands. After all, that’s all that matters, right?
But we hope we get to see more of this inside information in the upcoming Beatles documentary!
