Oscar Predictions Best Picture For 2023

Published by

This year’s Oscar nominees for best picture have taken the internet by storm.

All Quiet On The Western Front (Netflix)

So the first nominee in the Oscar Predictions for Best Picture is All Quiet On The Western Front. Actually, the first time for a World War I film to be made from the perspective of a German PoW.

Breathtaking cinematography from the masterful James Friend, along with scoring by Volker Bertelmann, make this film an achievement in the field of motion picture arts. A new landmark in war movies indeed.

Avatar: The Way of Water (Walt Disney)

And Avatar: The Way Of Water is the second nominee on our list of Oscar Predictions Best Picture. James Cameron’s obsessive attention to detail brings us a sequel to the blockbuster hit, ‘Avatar’. The setting is a utopian universe where evil forces threaten the peace and harmony of the land. This visual masterpiece is not one to be missed for fans of fantasy or anyone looking to be intrigued by the capabilities of present-day visual technology.

The Banshees Of Inisherin (Searchlight)

Next, we have on our Oscar Predictions Best Picture is The Banshees Of Inisherin. A tale of difficulties in the friendship of two men living in a village off the coast of Ireland. Martin McDonagh pairs two powerhouses, Collin Farell and Brendan Gleeson. Each gives us heartwarming performances that bring a lot of heart to a film about existential questions and the all-too-human struggle of facing one’s own mortality and the question of the significance of human life. This movie is a must-definite watch.

Elvis (Warner Bros.)

Now, what do we have next in our Oscar Predictions Best Picture list? Elvis for sure!! Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is an absolute spectacle. Stylistically similar to ‘The Great Gatsby’, Luhrmann gives us a glimpse of what it must have felt like to be in Elvis‘ shoes. Do you need another reason to watch it?

In case you do, Austin Butler literally channels Elvis Presley. It’s as if Elvis‘ ghost inhabited Butler for this role, who has yet to shake it off even in later press interviews (he is very much aware of his predicament). Elvis is the kind of theatrical experience only Luhrmann is capable of creating.

Everything Everywhere All At Once (A24)

If you thought Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was crazy, and no other picture can come close to it, then you are wrong. Because we have another picture coming your way that is crazier. Yes, we are talking about Everything Everywhere All At Once and it is next on our list of Oscar Predictions for Best Picture. This Daniel’s masterpiece takes a Chinese-American family that runs a laundromat business and puts them into an action-packed comedy that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It’s the kind of film that is an achievement in editing and special effects but that’s not all.

Directed by the visionary duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, this film defies genre and expectation, weaving together elements of science fiction, action, comedy, and drama into a dazzling tapestry of sight and sound. The film follows the journey of a middle-aged woman named Ling (played brilliantly by Michelle Yeoh) who discovers that she is not just one person, but a multiverse of selves spread across different dimensions and timelines. As Ling navigates this mind-bending reality, she must confront her own regrets, fears, and desires, all while battling an evil entity known as the Eternal.

The Fablemans (Universal/ Amblin Partners)

Next, we have The Fablemas on our list of Oscar Predictions for Best Picture. In this picture, Steven Spielberg tells his own story of childhood inspiration, and what made him fall in love with motion pictures. And the beginning of what would become a lifelong passion is a tribute to the movies. It will make you remember why you fell in love with the movies too and the very special magical feeling only they are capable of leaving you with.

Tár (Focus Features)

For viewers who are interested in refined arts, this is the kind of film you will find yourself going back to later. Yes, guys, we are talking about Tár as it’s worth watching a couple of times. And it is next on our Oscar Predictions Best Picture list. Todd Field is the writer and director of this movie. He was trained by Stanley Kubrick.

Moreover, Tár is his first major picture, especially the first to receive this kind of recognition. Cate Blanchett shines as a composer as she goes through the rise and fall of the very cutthroat world of art.

Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount)

Next, we have Top Gun: Maverick on our list of Oscar Predictions Best Picture. It is the sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 cult classic and is everything fans could ask for and more. It is the perfect blend of nostalgia, tribute and as I like to put it, ‘lots and lots of te*tosterone’.

Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller and a few other additions make the film a thoroughly entertaining watch with lots of flying sequences and the kind of thrills you expect when you buy a ticket to a ‘Top Gun‘ sequel.

Triangle Of Sadness (Neon)

Triangle Of Sadness is next on our list of Oscar Predictions Best Picture. It is a thought-provoking narration of the structure of power. It is a telling of the unfortunate nature of inequality, which always somehow persists. This one is one of the more artistic and raw films to be nominated this year. And it is not to be missed for those looking for a more profound cinematic experience to read into.

Women Talking (Orion Pictures/ Artists Releasing)

Director Sarah Polley’s adaptation of the novel with the same title Women Talking brings together an ensemble of Hollywood’s finest screen actresses. And it is next on our list of Oscar Predictions for Best Picture. Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand play members of an isolated religious community in this movie.

It is a story about abuse at the hands of those that wield power. ‘Women Talking’ is a balanced film in terms of its direction that gets the message across without compromising on aesthetic or artistic expression.

The Verdict

As we’ve seen, almost all nominees this year bring something unique to the big screen, however, one standout film from this year’s nominees is ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once.’

What makes ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once‘ remarkable is its ambitious premise and its execution. The film is a technical marvel, featuring stunning cinematography, intricate visual effects, and a propulsive score by Dan Deacon that drives the action forward. But it’s also a deeply emotional and resonant story, exploring themes of identity, mortality, and the power of human connection.

Michelle Yeoh delivers a tour-de-force performance, embodying multiple versions of Ling with nuance and depth. At the same time, the supporting cast (including Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and James Hong) adds to the film’s rich tapestry of characters and relationships.

I can confidently say that ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once‘ is my personal prediction for the winner. It’s a film that defies categorization and pushes the boundaries of what we expect from cinema, while also telling a heartfelt and engaging story.

But regardless of which film takes home the top prize, this year’s nominees demonstrate the incredible talent and creativity of the filmmakers and artists who continue to push the boundaries of cinema. We can’t wait to see who the Academy chooses, and we look forward to another year of outstanding filmmaking.
