Naomi Watts is an actress who requires no introduction. However, even she would have been drooling at the prospect of starring in Game of Thrones. After all, the hit HBO show broke all records and propelled each actor to unprecedented success. And that loss really affected Watts, who admitted she felt “pain” after the cancellation of the Game of Thrones prequel.
The actress was set to star in HBO’s prequel series, set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. Watts was set to star alongside John Whitehouse in the project under the supervision of showrunner Jane Goldman. Moreover, they had even shot the pilot episode. However, it was canceled last year and replaced with another prequel series for the show, House of the Dragon.
While talking to news.com.au, Naomi Watts revealed how she felt upset when the prequel was canceled:
I’m sorry, I feel your pain. I equally got into it. I wasn’t a huge fan and hadn’t seen the shows until I was hired and then completely binged everything within the space of a couple of months and it’s just wonderful. It’s a deep shame, it would have been great fun. But I am not allowed to give anything away I’m afraid.
Moreover, the Game of Thrones prequel was going to be quite unique and different from the original show. It was set thousands of years before the show’s events, in the mythical Age of Heroes. Naomi Watts would have been part of a show with a completely unique identity. An HBO press release described the prequel was set to:
…chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: it’s not the story we think we know.
It’s sad to see Naomi Watts upset about the cancelation of this show. However, HBO has moved on and is now focused on the other prequel, House of the Dragon. And sure enough, shooting will begin on the project next year in Watford.
As of right now, Paddy Considine is set to play Viserys Targaryen I. The show is based on A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, set 300 years before Game of Thrones began, narrating the start of the Targaryen rule over Westeros.
