Julia Garner Met The Real Anna Delvey | Here’s What Surprised Her The Most!

After Ozark, Julia Garner is going to be playing another complex character, Anna Delvey. It’s about the real life story of a conwoman Anna Delvey that so brilliantly conned her way to the top. However, she ended up being caught and is now currently facing prison time. Netflix and Shonda Rhimes have teamed up to tell her story with Julia Garner as the main lead.

Garner actually met the real Anna Delvey

In order to fully prepare for the role, actress Julia Garner went to the actual prison where Anna Delvey is doing her time. Julia Garner met the person she’s playing and she was surprised on getting to know her in real-life.

We always have some idea of who criminals are and there are usually a lot of stereotypes. Hence, Julia Garner was pleasantly surprised on getting to meet Anna Delvey.

Here’s what Garner had to say about Delvey:

“She’s a smart girl. She is. I can say this because I met her. I can see why people liked her.”

Furthermore, here’s what surprised Julia Garner the most:

“The thing I was most surprised about is how gentle she is. And she’s very funny. She’s very likeable. I think that’s why she got so far. She has something very also childlike about her, and I mean that in the most endearing way, which is also kind of scary, too.”

Moreover, Julia Garner asked Anna Delvey if she’s aware of how she is perceived to other people. To this, Delvey says that she doesn’t really think about it, she is just the way she is:

“My understanding from talking to her, I asked her, she said that she, it was so deep, she didn’t have time to reflect. I don’t think she even is aware in a way.”

‘Inventing Anna’ is Coming to Netflix on February 11th

Netflix is releasing ‘Inventing Anna’ this February on the 11th. The show is highly anticipated because of its stellar cast. Apart from Julia Garner as the leading lady, we also have Laverne Cox as Kacy Duke, Terry Kinney as Barry, Anna Chlumsky as Vivian, Anna Deavere Smith as Maude, Arian Moayed as Todd, Alexis Floyd as Neff and Karie Lowes as Rachel.

The story is about a Russian born German con woman who went by the name Anna Delvey who pretended to be a rich heiress in New York. She defrauded her rich friends and banks using her alias. The Netflix description reads as:

“This whole story is completely true. Except for all of the parts that are totally made up.”

However, the real Anna Delvey did get caught and is currently in prison. She was convicted on multiple counts of larceny and 2nd degree and theft of services. Delvey was sentenced to 4-12 years in state prison in May 2019. She was also given a fine of $24,000 and had to pay restitution with an amount of $199,000. She was released from prison in February 2021 but ICE took her in custody for overstaying her visa.
