The 2023 Academy Awards (2023 Oscars) were a night to remember! From Michelle Yeoh finally taking home an Oscar to Everything Everywhere All at Once sweeping the show, the 95th edition of the ceremony was filled with groundbreaking moments that will go down in cinematic history. It was a drama-free evening celebrating talent and inclusion, making for an enjoyable and historic event. Let’s take a look back at all the history that was made last night!
Michelle Yeoh made history at the 2023 Oscars when she became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress for her outstanding performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She was so overwhelmed with emotion that she dedicated her win to all the little boys and girls who look like her, calling it a “beacon of hope and possibilities.”
“Her message to them? “Dream big because dreams do come true!” Yeoh is the second woman of color to win the Best Actress Oscar since Halle Berry in 2002. What an amazing achievement!
Wow, Everything Everywhere All at Once rocked the house! It made history by sweeping seven trophies – 75% of the acting awards – and becoming only the third movie to do so after A Streetcar Named Desire and Network.
They made history again by becoming the first-ever movie to win three acting awards and Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars. Talk about an impressive feat! But that’s not all – it also made history yet again by being the first science-fiction film to win Best Picture. What a trailblazer!

Wow, talk about a spectacular achievement! The power duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once have truly outdone themselves by collectively winning three Oscars, making them a part of an elite group of fewer than 20 people.
And to top it all off, they won Best Director together – it’s the third time a non-solo director has won that award, following Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise, and brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Amazing!
What a night for Black creatives at the 2023 Oscars ceremony! Ruth Carter made history as the first Black woman to win not one but TWO Academy Awards in the show’s 95-year-long history!
She won her second award for her amazing costume design in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – a few years after taking home her first Oscar for the first movie in the franchise. Congratulations to Ruth Carter on this momentous achievement!
M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose’s song “Naatu Naatu,” the first song from an Indian movie to win the prestigious Best Original Song Oscar, made history on Sunday night. It was a night of celebration, and the couple’s acceptance speech was outstanding, with a wonderful nod to The Carpenters.
The performance of “Naatu Naatu” was already the highlight of the evening before they received the award, having a lasting effect on the crowd. Congratulations to the gifted team!
Last night was a night to remember for Mexican filmmaker Del Toro – he won three major awards at the 2023 Oscars for his upcoming animated film, Pinocchio.
Beaming with pride, Del Toro said in the press room, “It’s amazing to be honored for three things that define my life and my passion – picture, director, and animation. I’m hoping one day even to win a makeup effects award!”
But, more importantly, this is a huge win for the animation community in Mexico and Latin America, as it shows the potential for still-motion animation – a truly democratic form of art.
This is how history was made last night at Oscars 2023.
