Fantasy fiction crossovers are something that nerds covet. And let’s face it, everyone would love a crossover between Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Sadly, that might be a bit far fetched to watch on TV or in the cinema. But, that doesn’t stop us from imagining it, does it? That’s exactly what George RR Martin did when a fan asked him who would win a fight between Aragorn and Jamie Lannister. Here’s what he said:
In case you can’t recall, Aragorn, Son of Arathorn (Viggo Mortensen), Isildur’s heir, was the King of Gondor in Lord of the Rings. Whereas, Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was the fiercest knight alive in the 7 kingdoms and a son to Warden of the West, Tyrin Lannister. Both of these men had incredible sword-fighting skills. However, a fan asked George RR Martin in a public interview that who would win between Jamie and Aragorn?
At first, Martin had to make clear whether Jamie had both of his hands:
Aragorn or Jamie. Well, where are they fighting? And you know does Jamie have both of his hands?
However, George RR Martin was actually quite clear on who would win between the two. It was Jamie Lannister!
I think Jamie will probably take Aragorn. Especially if he was allowed to be armored. That’s one thing I hit on several of these rural cage matches.
Martin was willing to back armor, despite its disadvantages:
Armor was invented for a reason. It’s good to wear armor if you’re fighting with sharp pieces of metal. Yes, there are disadvantages to armor, you know, if you’re watering it full of water you may drown… but people wore armor because it protected them you know.
Moreover, the protection is worth the speed, according to George RR Martin:
You can be slightly faster and things like that but the armor guy that has armor on, a sword doesn’t cut through the armor by and large.
So, George is really sure that Jamie Lannister will beat Aragorn in a duel. Moreover, there was another duel in Game of Thrones that involved a similar concept. And again, the guy with the armor won.
It’s clear now how much George RR Martin loves his armor. Apart from Jamie Lannister and Aragorn, Martin also made clear of his philosophy in another duel. That was the famous duel between the Mountain Sandor Clegane and Oberyn Martell, the Viper of Dorne. As we all know, the Mountain was covered with it from head to toe. Whereas, Oberyn wore no armor, a lot like Aragorn. Martin further reiterated in the interview:
An armored character will win over a guy without armor 99% of the time certainly if they’re both skilled fighters.
So, it’s pretty clear. In a duel between Jamie Lannister and Aragorn, Jamie will come on top. That’s at least what George RR Martin thinks. Who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments below.
