Before the book was even published, Garland had already been in contact with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich about the possibility of turning it into a movie. He went so far as to write a 96-page script.

However, the producers had difficulty finding someone to play Kathy. That is, until Peter Rice, the head of the company financing the film, saw Mulligan’s performance in An Education and sent a text message recommending her for the role.
