Dixie D’Amelio commits to spread awareness on Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures

Dixie D’Amelio, one-half of the famous D’Amelio sisters, has recently turned 19. She is known for her content creation as well as her casual style and singing skills. Both Dixie and Charli D’Amelio try to stay away from the drama as much as possible. However, their huge fan-base can be threatening some times. Recently, someone from Dixie’s previous school started spreading rumors about Dixie faking seizures to get out of the school. Someone’s personal & mental issues should not be brought out in the public unless you have their consent to do so.

That’s why Dixie addressed the rumor by going LIVE on her TikTok. The tiktokroom also shared a footage of it after getting her consent. But that did not stop some adults and Karens for still calling her out on faking seizures, while she never faked it. Considering all the rumors on the internet, Dixie has committed to spread awareness about her Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures.

Dixie D’Amelio opens up about Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures

Clapping back at people who started the rumor mill, Dixie D’Amelio confirmed she never faked seizures. It’s unbelievable how far people can go just to get some clout and fame. The D’Amelio sisters are very famous internet personalities. Due to which they have to be very careful who they are associated with.

The rumors claimed that Dixie D’Amelio’s previous history teacher discussed her fake seizures in his class with some students. The main topic was “TikTok” and it automatically brought up the D’Amelio sisters. A few students are now coming out and claiming that it was one of the students who started the rumor, not the teacher. However, other “witnesses” claim it was the teacher, and other students are protecting him before his name leaks out in the public.

Here is a clip of Dixie D’Amelio talking about the incident and confirming she had Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures, or Pseudoseizures.

She also called out adults that were labeling her as “disgusting”:

Spreading awareness

It is pretty clear that people around the world are only aware of epileptic seizures. Nonepileptic or pseudoseizures are not common, but that does not mean the person going through it is faking seizures. Even though pseudo means false, the Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures are very real.

Dixie D’Amelio has confirmed that she is fine now. However, there is a need to spread awareness about these seizures considering how many people believed that she was faking it.

What are Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seziures?

The Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures are similar to epileptic seizures, but it’s not exactly epilepsy. People with PNES are often misdiagnosed with epilepsy. When some of them do not respond to the drug therapy, it is confirmed that they have been misdiagnosed.

There are subtle differences between epileptic and nonepileptic people. That’s why only trained physicians are capable of treating people with Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures.

Dixie D’Amelio has faced a very serious and uncommon issue. Declaring it a fake case for seeking attention, that’s unacceptable. Moreover, diagnosing PNES requires video EEG (electeroencephalofram) monitoring. If video EEG monitoring is not available, there are chances of misdiagnosis.

PNES or Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures are caused by manifestation of psychological distress or anxiety. The video EEG can take some hours of days of continuous monitoring until a seizure occurs. You can learn more about PNES here.

Please make sure to spread awareness about PNES. It is also linked to PTSD as trauma can trigger seizures. Dr. Selim Benbadis, Division Director of Epilepsy, EEG and Sleep Medicine at University of South Florida, said:

PNES is a real condition that arises in response to real stressors. These seizures are not consciously produced and are not the patient’s fault.
