While most of the time, celebrities are civil and respectable towards each other, sometimes the exchange can be awkward too. Recently, Katie Couric recalled an uncomfortable interview with Denzel Washington.
While Katie Couric is best known for her daytime talk show, Katie, she has an impressive resume. Initially, she worked for ABC News as a reporter. However, she moved on to CNN shortly after and worked as an assignment editor. From 1989 to 2006, Katie Couric worked with NBC as a deputy Pentagon correspondent and a substitute anchor. Not only is she a world-renowned journalist, but she has also written many books as well.
On the other hand, Denzel Washington started his career with a comedy-drama film, Carbon Copy. However, it was his portrayal of an ex-slave soldier in Glory which brought him into the spotlight. That film earned him his first Oscar win. After that, there was no looking back for Denzel Washington and he starred in many award-winning films. Some of his best films include Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Training Day, The Manchurian Candidate, American Gangster, and Fences.
During her appearance on a podcast, ‘Everything Iconic’ with Danny Pellegrino, she shared her experience. When asked if any interview left her ‘bamboozled’, she remembers her interaction with Denzel Washington. She said:
“I think he totally misconstrued a question I asked and kind of jumped all over me. I love him. And I admire him so much – he’s one of my favourite actors – but I remember walking out feeling kind of shaken that he had gone after me in a way that was completely, weirdly uncalled for.”
It was her interview with the cast of The Manchurian Candidate for Dateline. During the interview, she asked Denzel Washington if Hollywood folks should stick to acting and not talk about politics. However, he took offense and said:
“I don’t know what Hollywood folks are, first of all,” Washington responded. “Hollywood is a town that has some stars on the sidewalk. I don’t know anybody from there. So, I don’t … that’s like saying … calling you a type of folks. I’m not a Hollywood folk. I don’t know who they are.”
When Couric tried to explain her question and rephrase it, he said:
“Ah, there you go. ‘Am I one of those people?’ Hmmm, isn’t that interesting? I heard what you just said. ‘Am I one of those people?’ No, I’m not. I’m a human being. My job is acting.”
This was the interview that left Couric disturbed and uncomfortable.
