Demi Lovato Opens Up About Rehab in Sonny With A Chance Reunion

Published by

During quarantine, we have seen many former co-stars reunited via Zoom. Similarly, Sonny With a Chance cast got back together to discuss their lives after the show. On the reunion, Demi Lovato’s rehab experience came up and the singer got candid.

Although she is best know for her music, Lovato has many hit TV shows under her belt including Sonny With a Chance

Created by Steve Marmel, Sonny With a Chance is the first Disney Channel Original Series shot and on-aired in high-definition. Although it ran for only two seasons, the show well-received by the audience. Interestingly, this series is one of the three Disney Channel Originals which features a show-within-a-show. Based in Wisconsin, the story revolves around Demi Lovato’s character, Sonny. Although she portrays a sweet, friendly girl, she becomes a star of a comedy sketch TV show, So Random! During the premise of the series, she dates a star from another TV show, Mackenzie Falls. Throughout, she is seen resolving disputes between the casts of So Random! and Mackenzie Falls. After the two successful seasons, Disney renewed the show for the third season. However, it could not happen due to Demi Lovato’s rehab stay. Although Disney hoped for her return, they announced in 2011 that she has quit the show.

Recently, the cast of the show reunited and discussed Demi Lovato’s rehab experience

During the Zoom reunion, the cast members shared their lives after the show. When it came to the protagonist, Demi Lovato’s rehab stay came up. While talking about it, she said:

“I went to rehab. Several times!”

At the age of 19, Demi Lovato went to rehab for the first time. The reason behind Demi Lovato’s rehab stay was depression, eating disorders, and self-harming. During her reunion with Sonny With a Chance co-stars, she addressed Tiffany Thornton and said:

“When I went away to treatment for the first time, you were my biggest inspiration coming out of it because you dealt with all of those pressures of being a woman on TV. I looked at that as, ‘I wish I had that so bad.’ Yes, I probably was happier in my head with whatever I looked like at the time. But I’m so much happier now with the mentality that you have. I look back now and I’m like, Man, it’s a shame that we wasted any energy on what we wore on set.”

Furthermore, she said:

“I had an eating disorder and I was underweight and freezing! I would have people over for meetings on my lunch breaks, because that’s how much I worked. People would come in and I’d be covered in a blanket and people would say, ‘Why is it 80 degrees in here?’ I would be like, ‘Because I’m freezing.’ They would be like, ‘Oh my god, what’s wrong with you?'”

After several of Demi Lovato’s rehab stays, the singer is in a good place now.
