1. The Road
This movie is on our list of some of the best post-apocalyptic movies out there. The Road, an adaptation of the novel by Cormac McCarthy by the same name, is a rather gloomy movie that does not have many happy moments. The film follows a father and son in a post-apocalyptic world and their struggle to survive.
The two of them set out on their journey across a rundown America in order to reach a more inhabitable place. The film may be the best movie to watch if you are in the mood to watch a pure post-apocalyptic movie. But it is also the saddest one out there.
2. Wall-E
While most post-apocalyptic movies are rather dark, Wall-E is like a breath of fresh air in the genre as it tells a heartwarming story. The story takes place way into the future where most of the Earth’s population has settled in space and a robot named Wall-E whose responsibility is to clean up the Earth after the chaos of the Apocalypse. However, things take a turn when Wall-E falls in love with Eve, another robot. This film is the perfect light family-friendly post-apocalyptic movie and would also be considered Pixar’s finest work.

3. Mad Max: Fury Road
The 21st Century version of the Mad Max series that inspired the post-apocalyptic genre, Fury Road sets the scene for two hours of non-stop adrenaline rush. George Miller brings back his franchise bigger and better. This film gives you the best post-apocalyptic action out there. Including explosions and intense car chase scenes all happening in what would be classified as ‘the remains of society. Fury Road impressed the audience to a great extent and labeled it as a masterpiece. And it is on our list of the best post-apocalyptic movies out there.
4. A Quiet Place
A perfect horror movie to watch if you want to be at the edge of your sofa seat. A Quiet Place follows the story of a family in a world where most humans are killed by blind monsters who hunt on the basis of sound alone. The family has to escape these monsters by speaking in sign language and not making any noise. The context makes for some thrilling scenes and a handful of jump scares as well.
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt gave one of the best performances of their careers in this sci-fi horror. A Quiet Place managed to impress the audience enough that a sequel to it was released in 2020. Moreover, this movie also managed to land a spot on our best post-apocalyptic movies out there.
5. 28 Days Later
Placed at No.3 on the 100 Best Post-Apocalyptic Movies, 28 Days Later takes place in post-apocalyptic Britain. However, in this film, the Apocalypse has taken place only in Britain as opposed to the whole world. Featuring the iconic Cillian Murphy as Jim, this film follows how after a virus outbreak creates chaos, a group of survivors struggle with the aftermath and find their way to a secure place.
The film provides for a chilling watch as Jim wanders around the empty and eerie city of London. After waking up from a coma, he tries to figure out what happened to the people around him. The film has created a new standard for ‘zombie movies’. And is among one of the best post-apocalyptic movies out there.
6. The Book of Eli
The Book of Eli is set 30 years after a nuclear bomb creates havoc. There is not much hope for humanity as people all over are either killing each other or eating each other. Amidst all this, the story follows Eli played by the remarkable Denzel Washington. He carries a book through the remains of North America. The book is said to have the very secret that could save mankind. The film gives the audience a suspenseful watch with an interesting twist in the story as well as creates a best post-apocalyptic movie.
7. I Am Legend
A performance that is a highlight of Will Smith’s career, I am Legend follows Robert Neville, a virologist with the U.S. Army. In a world where a botched cancer cure destroyed most of humanity. And turned what is left of it into dangerous creatures. However, Robert finds himself to be immune to the disease. Hence he sets out on a mission to find a way to save the human race.
The highlight of this film is the dog that accompanies Robert during his mission to save the world. Labeled as the American version of 28 Days Later, I am Legend sets out a visually appealing screenplay. And this movie is on our best post-apocalyptic movies list.
8. Dredd
In 2012, director Pete Travis released Dredd. It is a fresh adaptation of 2000 A.D.’s enormously popular Judge Dredd comic book, which stars Karl Urban in an exact replica of the comics version of the lead character. The film is set out in a futuristic town. In which the police have the power to act as the judge, the jury, and the executioner.
In such a situation, the film follows how a cop along with a trainee team up to go against a drug mafia led by a drug lord named Ma-Ma. This mafia is said to be in charge of dealing with a reality-altering drug.
9. Twelve Monkeys
Setting the scene for an intense time-travel film, Twelve Monkeys stars Bruce Willis in the lead and Brad Pitt gives the performance of his career. The film follows James who is sent back in time to find the root cause behind the outbreak of a deadly virus.
However, when he travels back to the 90s, he faces difficulty in trying to convince people of the truth. Later on, he is also placed in a psychiatric facility. The film was such a hit. That a TV series based on the same storyline was also created in 2015. And it ran for four seasons.

10. Children of Men
Nominated for three Oscars, Children of Men is set in the year 2027. Society is on the brink of extinction as women are no longer fertile and cannot give birth. In the midst of all this, Theo, a former activist, comes across a pregnant woman. The film then follows how Theo protects the woman and brings her to safety from the dangers of the world.
A genre where the sense of hope is not really available, Children of Men gives just enough of that when they showcase the struggle to bring a new life, a new tomorrow, and a certain hope back into society.
11. Snow Piercer
From the creator of the Oscar-winning Parasite, Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer follows a train that carries the last of humanity. The film depicts the reality of a class system and societal issues. Chris Evans plays Curtis, a man who wants to break this class system and uncover the truth behind it.
Snowpiercer makes for the perfect suspense and action-packed movie and has also been turned into a TV show. Moreover, it’s also one of the best post-apocalyptic movies out there.
