Why did Avril Lavigne disappear from the spotlight?

With her hit track “Complicated” in 2002, Avril Lavigne burst onto the pop music scene. And it was not long before she became the industry’s pop punk princess with her powerful voice and catchy hooks. The Canadian singer-songwriter has enjoyed a series of hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including “I’m With You,” “Girlfriend,” and “Sk8er Boi,” since then, but we got to admit that she’s been pretty quiet lately.

Avril has battled serious mental and physical challenges, behind the scenes. And whenever she was under the spotlight it would always be for the wrong reasons. Being entangled in an outrageous conspiracy theory that just will not quit, she even had her romances have become the stuff of tabloid fodder. Not to mention her music, or lack thereof.

Here are a few possible reasons why the singer decided to disappear from the spotlight.

A conspiracy theory about Avril Lavigne

Avril did attract some really weird PR, thanks to a bizarre conspiracy theory according to which Avril committed suicide in 2003 and was replaced by a lookalike actress named Melissa.

It was determined long after the hoax went viral that it was merely an elaborate joke meant to show how easy it is to make conspiracy theories seem true. However, in May of 2017, the rumor returned with “evidence” to confirm that the Avril we know, and love is an imposter. The plotters claimed changes in height, image, and darker song lyrics by the singer.

Lyme disease diagnosis

Another reason could be her Lyme disease diagnosis back in 2014. After undergoing flu-like symptoms for months and seeing multiple specialists, the singer was diagnosed with the disease that has not left Avril to this date. She disappeared from the spotlight and took a three-year hiatus from music facing a long recovery.

Avril Lavigne was doing much better by 2017 according to E! News insider:

“Avril is in a really good place right now,” the insider said. “Her recovery has been going well and she’s been getting stronger and stronger. She has more energy and has even been exercising.”

Divorce with Nickelback frontman Kroeger

One other reason could be Avril Lavigne’s divorce with Nickelback frontman Kroeger.  The duo shared a seemingly perfect union with each other. So, when their two-year marriage ended in 2015. The “Let Me Go” singer was compelled to concentrate even more of her energy and time on her private life rather than her professional ventures.

It seems that after spending years out of the spotlight. Avril Lavigne is gearing up for a musical comeback as she released a statement on her Instagram in 2018 that will finally try get her career back on track!

“I’ve started mixing my album and all of the pieces are finally coming together. These songs are so close to my heart. Wish me luck while I throw every last drop of me into these final stages. Time is power. And I needed this time. To live. To write To go through my ups and downs.”
