Let’s face it, we all miss Freddie Mercury. The lead singer of Queen left the world in awe of his voice. To this day, he is regarded as the greatest singer in rock history, and no one can deny that. Besides, many of us young fans of the late singer never got the chance to hear him live. Moreover, considering how much he rocked the stage in every performance of his, it hurts us every day. His song “Bohemian Rhapsody” still shatters records to this day. However, there is some good news for us Queen fans! There is a singer who sounds exactly like Freddie, and his name is Marc Martel!
More than 8 years ago, a video surfaced on YouTube with a random guy singing Queen’s “Somebody to Love”. Queen and Freddie Mercury fans were left astounded. It was Marc Martel, and the internet just lost it. Here is that video:
I am sure watching this must have left your jaw dropped to the floor. But you’ll feel better when you find out that you weren’t the only one. That was the general reaction of everyone who saw that video. Once he gained recognition, Queen artists Brian May and Roger Taylor chose him for the Queen Tribute project, “Queen Extravaganza”. Since then, Ellen DeGeneres has called him onto her show too and as expected Marc’s popularity is going upwards. When Celine Dion heard him live, she lost it. It was as if she was hearing Freddie Mercury singing live!
Incredible, right? Well, the good news is that he didn’t just stop there. Every Queen fan who went and saw “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the cinemas has heard his voice too!
With a voice that starkly resembles Freddie’s own voice, big producers were inevitably going to notice him. Finally, he got his break in 2018’s Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His voice was used interchangeably with original Queen recordings and Rami Malek’s own voice throughout the movie. Marc told noise11 in an interview:
They hired me to do some of the singing in the movie and give the audience an immersive experience and not be able to tell where the singing is coming from. It is to make the audience believe they are really watching Freddie Mercury sing.
The audience couldn’t tell the difference between any of the 3 vocals used. Therefore, it is a testament of how good Marc’s voice is and how similar it is to Freddie’s
It has been almost 29 years since Freddie Mercury left us, but his music roars on. Many of us young fans missed the chance of seeing him live, and it still hurts us. However, hearing Marc’s voice is one of the few condolences we can give to our hearts. We hope he is able to use his incredible voice to keep Freddie’s memories alive among the generations to come.
