Everyone knows about the political activism of ‘The 1975’. They are a very politically charged band and they do not shy from adding it to their music. However, recently their frontman Matty Healy tweeted in favor of Black Lives Matter and George Floyd’s killing. But, it wasn’t received well as he was accused of using the movement to promote his music.
In light of George Floyd’s killing and Black Lives Matter trending on Twitter, the 1975’s Matty Healy decided to tweet in favor of it. He said:
If you truly believe that ‘ALL LIVES MATTER’ you need to stop facilitating the end of black ones.
Along with this message, he added a link to his song “Love it if we made it“, which included lyrics about racism and police brutality. However, this tweet by Healy did not get a positive reception from the rest of Twitter. He received backlash for promoting his own music using the Black Lives Matter movement. Therefore, in response, Matty Healy said:
Sorry I did not link my song in that tweet to make it about me it’s just that the song is literally about this disgusting situation and speaks more eloquently than I can on Twitter.
These tweets my The 1975’s Matty Healy sparked a massive debate on Twitter. Since tweeting this, Healy has deactivated his Twitter account. However, users are still arguing for and against him.
As expected, Matty Healy’s tweet divided Twitter into two camps. One group was canceling Healy and ‘The 1975’, saying that he used the Black Lives Matter movement and the George Floyd killing to promote his music. Some users said:
However, there are many users who were tweeting in support of Healy. They were against canceling Matty Healy and The 1975. Their argument was that the song “Love it if we made it” actually talked about police brutality and racism. They believe that this song’s lyrics were the perfect message the band could send over Black Lives Matter, and the Minneapolis protests. Therefore, Healy sharing the song was justified, well intensified, and appropriate for the occasion.
However, this isn’t the only occasion when Matty Healy and The 1975 have been involved in controversy. Healy was previously accused of completely neglecting his White Privilege of being able to criticize religion. Moreover, some fans even blamed him for Islamophobia in his interview. So, being in the news isn’t something new for Matty Healy and The 1975, including the Black Lives Matter and George Floyd’s killing.
