One of the main reasons for the popularity of The Vampire Diaries was their hot on-screen scenes between the cast. However, one relationship stood out from all others. Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore was downright the hottest couple on the show. Well, why wouldn’t it? Their on-screen and off-screen chemistry was just too raw. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev dated from season 2 of the show to season 5. That is from 2011-2013. The undeniable attraction towards one another is shown pretty well in the show as Elena learns to fall in love with the elder Salvatore brother over the years. Honestly, we loved all the stolen kisses and moments of weakness between the two during Vampire Diaries season 3.

Sadly though, the couple called it quits in 2013. Seemed like Ian and Nina were into very different places in their relationship.

In 2013, Ian seemed ready to tie the knot but, Nina was a whole 10 years behind. In age, career and life plans. Fans all over the world wanted them to last forever but it seems like their plans for life, really got in the way of their commitment to one another. However, only a few months after their break-up, Ian Somerhalder confirmed he was dating Twilight star, Nikki. And well, in 6 months of their relationship, Ian proposed and the rest is history!

Meanwhile, Nina Dobrev wanted to improve her career and explore different options for her. She even talked about her relationship several times to clear the air. It seems like every time she has talked about it she has talked about how she is happy for the couple and they are still good friends. But we do feel that there is more to their side of the story as shortly after Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder got together Nina Dobrev announced that she was leaving the vampire diaries. Even though she talked about wanting to venture into new projects the timing seems pretty in line with the Ian Somerhalder break up. We do believe their on-screen chemistry was one of the main reasons The Vampire Diaries rates 7.7/10 on IMDb.

Well, guess we won’t ever know the full story to what really happened but it is honestly heartbreaking for fans around the world even today. Although, everyone is happy for Ian and Nina and what they are doing with their lives today. A small part of us still wishes that Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore would have lived forever.
