For Millennials. By Millennials.
The era of great Mafia TV shows is still here. Goodfellas author Nicholas Pileggi and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter are teaming up for a TV show about a Mafia family. And you’d be forgiven for thinking that we’re talking about The Sopranos. But, in reality, it’s a completely new show, and we have plenty to be excited about!
Goodfellas writers making the new Sopranos?
Along with power producer Brian Grazer, Nicholas Pileggi and Terence Winter are the executive producers for this new Mafia TV show. They have extensive working experience on The Sopranos and Goodfellas. According to Deadline, the show is:
“inspired by Pileggi’s in-depth chronology of organized crime in America — which is also the history of corruption in America — as seen through the eyes of the mafia’s First Family.”
Moreover, Pileggi and Winter are ideal to write a show on tough guys. Pileggi’s writing experience on Goodfellas speaks volumes. And before Boardwalk Empire, Winter wrote 25 episodes for The Sopranos. In my opinion, Sopranos is the greatest TV show of all time. But, that’s not the kind of pressure these writers need for this new Mafia TV show. It’s almost impossible to reach those heights on Television again. Plus, I’m sure they will not want to repeat their work from Goodfellas and The Sopranos. However, we can expect them to make a truly memorable show that fans are going to love.
For Pileggi, apart from writing Goodfellas, and the book it was based on, he also co-wrote Casino with Martin Scorsese. He also served as an executive producer on Scorsese’s recent film on Netflix, The Irishman.
On the other hand, Winter is the man who truly knows best how to make a TV show about a Mafia family. The Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated writer shot to fame after writing 25 episodes on The Sopranos. He got an Oscar nomination for writing Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. With experiences like The Sopranos and Goodfellas, you can expect something spectacular, at the very least.
