Published by

Every genre imaginable has produced numerous legendary R-rated films over the years. The heritage of cinema has been profoundly impacted by remarkable tales. From horror to science fiction, comedy, and superhero flicks. However, there is something particularly unique about R-rated comedies. Comedy films that defy the limits of a PG-13 certification can explore raunchier and darker themes, giving adult audiences a more intense experience.

If you are looking for something dark and comedy. then we have got you covered. As we have made a list of some of the best R-rated comedy movies. So what are you waiting for? Get your bag of sizzling hot popcorn from the oven to watch some really funny R-rated comedy movie marathon.

1. Ted

This 2012 Seth MacFarlane directorial perhaps has the most straightforward, simple, and somewhat lackluster plot of all of the movies on this list, which is a significant statement for a list that only includes comedies. All of that, though, is not really important for most of its running length because you get to see a speaking Teddy Bear curse, consume marijuana, engage in sexual activity, and generally be obnoxious and loud around everyone.

The story-line of Ted is quite straightforward. A young boy’s dream to see his beloved stuffed toy become alive is granted. However, issues arise once they are all adults. He now has to decide between hanging out with his lifelong friend or being a normal adult with obligations and a mature relationship.

Despite the synthetic nature of the conclusion, the film’s incredible voice acting abilities, with Seth MacFarlane voicing the character of Ted, as well as Mark Wahlberg’s presence, a few amusing yet witty one-liners, and a boatload of 80s references, ultimately work immensely in the film’s favor. Another addition to the best R-rated comedy movies out there would definitely be Ted.

2. We’re The Millers

We’re The Millers on the surface appears to be a regular family comedy, but in reality, it’s far from that. This 2013 American crime comedy film directed by Rawson M. Thurber is one of those outrageous funny R-rated comedy movies you watch on a dull weekend to brighten things up a little. The film follows a drug dealer named David who is compelled by his employer to import drugs illegally from Mexico. To assist him in smuggling the drugs, he recruits a stripper, a small-time burglar, and a teenage neighbor. He gathers everyone in order to create a false family so no one suspects him.

We’re the Millers is the type of movie you will not remember a week or two after watching it. The type of instantly forgettable yet fun-at-time film appears to be the mantra of every other somewhat satisfactory modern blockbuster. The film stars Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter in key roles.

3. Bridesmaids

Since we are talking about funny R-rated comedy movies, it is only right to mention this iconic 2011 movie. Bridesmaids redefined the comedy scene. It is not just a comedy film, but a truly excellent movie. Bridesmaids is directed by Paul Feig. And it is written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. It demonstrates the dynamic power of some of Hollywood’s funniest women.

The film follows the story of Annie, a jobless chef, whose best friend, Lillian, is getting married. Lillian asks Annie to be her maid of honor. Problems arise when Annie destroys the wedding festivities in a fit of anger because of her disagreements with a bridesmaid. The film stars Maya Rudolph. Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey as the main cast.

Bridesmaids succeed in being as obscene as comparable movies starring the funniest guys in the category and occasionally goes even further. Another standout is Melissa McCarthy. She even got nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Megan. Since you never know what will make her respond, she is consistently and surprisingly funny. The reigning champion of this list, Bridesmaids, demonstrates the need for more comedies with strong female leads.

4. The Dictator

This list of best R-rated comedy movies would be incomplete if it did not mention Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘The Dictator’. Baron-Cohen is at his best in this film. This rather satirical and political comedy film comes from director Larry Charles and is co-written by Baron-Cohen. The film follows the harsh ruler Aladeen who makes a trip to New York to meet the UN Security Council. However, things take a turn when he is kidnapped by a hitman on the orders of his uncle, Tamir.

If you find yourself quickly offended or are not more “liberal” with jokes, this movie is not for you because it will do all in its ability to upset you. Nearly all political ideologies, religions, communities, races, sexualities, and even entire nations have been parodied, mocked, or critiqued by Sacha Baron-Cohen. Despite all that, it gives a good laugh seeing Aladeen be out of his comfort zone when he is kidnapped. And the humor Baron-Cohen brings to the character. As he is flabbergasted learning all the things he did not know while living his lavish life as the ‘Dictator’.

5. The Hangover

The Hangover was supposed to be a lighthearted and forgettable excursion. But it turned out to be one of the most popular series in Hollywood’s history of comedy series. The first Hangover movie, which Todd Phillips directed, is well deserving of praise. Bradly Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha play buddies who go on a variety of crazy misadventures throughout the movie.

The Wolf Pack i.e. all four of them drive to Vegas for a bachelor party. However, when they wake up the next morning, they have no memory of the previous evening. To top things off, they are unable to locate their friend who is soon to get married.

Although the idea is straightforward, the characters’ rapport in the several improbable situations elevates this film above the rest. The Hangover is one of the best R-rated comedy movies out there. And it has a whopping 7.7 IMDb rating.

6. The 40-Year-Old Virgin

One cannot make a list of R-rated comedy movies and not mention this Judd Apatow film. The jokes from this film are some of the best out there. Some may even call them timeless. Even today, its ensemble cast and comedic premise are sure to make you chuckle. Judd Apatow’s “rat pack” era, in which he frequently starred comedians like Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd began with this 2000s comedy. The film follows a forty-year-old virgin, Andy, who enjoys his life while working at an electronics store. His coworkers decide to assist him in losing his virginity after learning about his celibacy.

The amusing chemistry between the profane Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Romany Malco and a presumably innocent as well as sexually unaware Steve Carrell makes the R-rated humor in The 40-Year-Old Virgin work so effectively.

7. Superbad

Actors Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, and director Judd Apatow have collaborated on some of the funniest and the best comedic films in recent years. One of their first projects together was Superbad. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera play the role of kids all set to graduate from high school. They plan to throw a once-in-a-lifetime party and lose their v card prior to getting their diplomas in the movie. But as fate would have it, the plans fall apart and the leads become entangled in a web of absurd and uncomfortable circumstances.

The movie debuted to favorable reviews, with particular attention paid to the on-screen chemistry between the two stars. It was one of the most financially successful and commercially successful R-rated movies ever, with approximately eight times the budget in almost-total revenue. In this list of funny R-rated comedy movies, Superbad is easily the funniest one of them all.
