Back To The Future Writer Responds To Avengers Endgame Time Travel

Published by

We love it when we get little pop culture references in modern films. And without a doubt, millions of fans across the world caught that little ‘Back to the Future’ snub in Avengers: Endgame. Only the Marvel can pull something off like that seamlessly. But, it looks like ‘Back to the Future’ Screenwriter Bob Gale writer took the snub to heart.

Gayle says Endgame followed ‘Back to the Future’s’ time travel rules

Michael J. Fox’s blockbuster is arguably the most famous time travel movie of all time. In fact, it’s so famous that most people think time travel works the same way Robert Zemeckis showed in the movie. That’s why ‘Avengers: Endgame’ made a reference to the movie twice. Once when Scott Lang tried to convince Tony Stark for the time heist, and second when Hulk explains the movie’s own rules to Scott Lang and the rest of the characters. But, the MCU wanted to distance itself from the rules of time travel from ‘Back to the Future’. That’s why Scott Lang called the blockbuster trilogy “B*llsh*t”, famously. Here, take a look at the scene:

Of course, the ‘Back to the Future’ screenwriter Bob Gale must not have liked that scene. In the Russo Bros. Pizza Film School episode, Gale, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, and Endgame’s co-writers Stephen McFeely and Cristopher Markus had a chat. There, Gale let the entire Endgame team know what he thought about their ‘Back to the Future’ reference. He said that despite establishing that their time travel rules are different than the ones in ‘Back to the Future’, they end up following them anyway. He said:

“You say ‘You mean Back to the Future’s bulls**t?’, but at the end of the day you guys end up going back into the first Avengers movie and into the earlier Thor movies so it really is kinda like Back to the Future.”

The Russos try and defend Endgame

Bob Gale really showed that despite being 69 years old, he was well aware of the MCU. The Russos and the other writers immediately defended themselves, saying that the rules they’re talking about aim at ‘Back to the Future part II’. The sub-plot they were talking about was how Biff Tanon made himself rich by giving himself the Almanac in the past. Moreover, the Russos say they gave a reference to ‘Back to the Future’ because that’s how most of the audience think time travel works.

Regardless, this shows how in touch with the present times is Bob Gale, despite his age. And it also shows how much love he has for ‘Back to the Future’. What do you guys think? Did ‘Avengers: Endgame’ end up following Back to the Future’s time travel rules? Let us know in the comments below.
