There’s always something lovely about cameos and guest appearances. You know the creators and actors did it with a lot of love in mind for the viewers. But, sometimes creators go the extra mile to bring some big names for a small appearance. And that’s exactly what Friends star Matthew Perry, who played the role of Chandler Bing, did to bring Julia Roberts to make an appearance on the show.
Matthew Perry had to write a quantum physics paper to bring Julia Roberts on Friends
On the 25th anniversary of the Friends episode, The One After the Superbowl, writers and creators of the show teamed up for an interview. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Friends co-creator Kevin Bright revealed the extraordinary story behind getting Roberts to appear on Friends. He said:
Do you know the story of how we got [Julia Roberts]? Matthew [Perry, one of the stars] asked her to be on the show. She wrote back to him, ‘Write me a paper on quantum physics and I’ll do it.’ My understanding is that Matthew went away and wrote a paper and faxed it to her the next day.
Furthermore, co-creator Marta Kauffman reveals that having Roberts on the show was incredibly exciting. She said:
Getting Julia Roberts was incredibly exciting. We knew she would have the right touch for it. And when she said yes, it was pretty awesome.
That said, Perry’s effort to write a physics paper for Roberts did not go fruitless. Alexa Jung, who was one of the writers on Friends, said Roberts was really interested in Perry, saying:
They may have met before the episode, but she was interested in him from afar because he’s so charming. There was a lot of flirting over faxing. She was giving him these questionnaires like, ‘Why should I go out with you?’ And everyone in the writers room helped him explain to her why. He could do pretty well without us, but there was no question we were on Team Matthew and trying to make it happen for him.
After Julia Robert’s brief appearance on Friends, she dated Matthew Perry briefly.
