2023 Oscars: When The Champagne Carpet Was Soaked In Memorable Moments

Published by

The 95th Academy Awards were super special for Asian and Asian American creators, with Ke Huy Quan snagging Best Supporting Actor and Director Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert cleaning up with Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. Stephanie Hsu and Hong Chau also got nominations for acting awards, and there were nods for costume designer Shirley Kurata, musicians Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia (two-thirds of the band Son Lux), Mitski, and even Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro. And let’s not forget the epic “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian film RRR, which won Best Original Song and will be stuck in my head forever.

Some of the best Oscars 2023 moments included Michelle Yeoh bringing home Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once“. Not just that, she made history as the first Asian actor to do so. She was up against some tough competition, including Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams, surprise nominee Andrea Risebourough, and Cate Blanchett, who got a nod for playing a composer named Lydia Tár, who’s not even a real person. Can you believe it?

The 2023 Oscars were fire for musicians, with Lady Gaga and Rihanna slaying their Best Original Song nominations with “Hold My Hand” from ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ and “Lift Me Up” from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ respectively. And can we talk about Rihanna’s sheer brown Alaïa outfit and crystal bra ensemble? This mama is killing it in her second pregnancy, and she deserves all the Champagne carpets. But let’s not forget about the other big moments of the night. Some were amazing, and some were downright cringe. Check out our list of the best and worst moments in Oscars 2023 below!

The Red Carpet Got More Champagne Than The Celebrities!

This year’s Oscars red carpet was the color of bubbly, but it turned out to be a bit of a disaster. Celebrities were not given much notice about the carpet’s color and ended up blending into it like human champagne glasses. The result? Numerous fashion casualties, including Florence Pugh’s gorgeous Valentino dress and Zoë Saldana’s cream-colored Fendi outfit.

It’s a good thing champagne stains are hard to see on a champagne-colored carpet because it’s definitely not a perfect ten. Three out of ten bubbly disasters.

So, Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars again; honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. Kimmel said he didn’t think he’d be asked back, but the Academy brought him back anyway because they love their routine. His monologue was a snoozefest, with jokes about Ozempic and the lack of women directors nominated for Best Director.

He also tried to make light of that whole “slap” incident, which was just cringe. And don’t even get me started on the donkey he brought on stage that clearly didn’t want to be there. Plus, he bothered Malala Yousafzai with questions about spitgate (when the internet thought Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine) when she just wanted to talk about peace. Honestly, one out of ten Champagne carpets for Kimmel this year.

Did Austin Butler Bid Farewell To His Elvis Impersonation?

The actor, who went full method for his role in the biopic, kept his southern drawl even after the cameras stopped rolling. But on the Champagne carpet, we heard a glimmer of hope – Butler’s voice was slightly less “thank you very much” and more “hello, how are you?” Could it be a sign of a new era for the actor’s vocal cords?

Or will he keep channeling the King like a stuck record? Only time will tell, but we’ll give him a mediocre rating of three out of ten Champagne carpets.

Jonathan Majors And His Beloved Little Cup: A Match Made In Red Carpet Heaven

Can you believe Jonathan Majors showed up at the Oscars without his iconic little cup? Of course not! This man is seriously attached to his beverage holder, saying, “We have the mug because we always have the mug” on the Champagne carpet. Their relationship is unbreakable, and we’re giving them a perfect ten out of ten for their dedication to each other.

Paul Mescal Steals Hearts & Takes Us Back To High School With Epic Prom Night Performance!

The king of our hearts and the one who turns red in front of Zendaya (we feel you, man) made a grand entrance in a mini mullet, a snazzy white suit, and a rose boutonniere. Without a doubt, we’re all saying “yes” to prom with him.

Mescal scored a nomination for Best Actor, portraying a heartbroken dad vacationing with his little girl in the Turkish sun in the flick ‘Aftersun’. The carpet of Champagne gets eight stars out of ten for his appearance.

Get Ready To Dance: The Oscars Had An Epic Bollywood Moment With ‘Naatu Naatu’

RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” had the audience on their feet, leaving us all craving suspenders after Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava’s lively performance. The anti-colonialist Telegu track was hailed as “a total banger” by Bollywood actress and presenter Deepika Padukone. Winning Best Original Song, we’re still riding the euphoria wave. Ten out of ten Champagne carpets!

Michelle Yeoh Breaks Glass Ceiling With Historic Win

Michelle Yeoh rocked the Oscars by becoming the first woman of color to snag Best Actress in over two decades. Her portrayal of a badass mom with superpowers in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once‘ was nothing short of heroic, and her acceptance speech left us feeling all the feels.

“For all the little ones out there who look like me, this is a ray of light and endless possibilities,” Yeoh said, before adding, “And hey, to all the ladies out there, don’t let anyone ever tell you that you’re over the hill.” Before the show, Yeoh also threw some shade by sharing a Vogue article on the lack of diversity in the category, which she later took down. Perfect ten on the Champagne carpet scale!
