Fans were first surprised to hear of the return of Neo and Trinity
What made The Matrix trilogy truly amazing with regards to its ending is how the protagonists gave up their lives for the betterment of humanity. The love story of Trinity and Neo truly transcended the realms of reality. But, if you thought their love was over, you were mistaken. Rumors started coming years ago about the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. Of course, fans still don’t know how they managed to bring them back in The Matrix 4, but we do have some idea after the release of the first trailer.
What we do know for now is that both Neo and Trinity have no recollection of the events that took place in the original trilogy. In fact, they don’t even recognize each other, as Trinity asked Neo in the trailer, ‘Have we met?’ However, what we now do know is the reason why we’re seeing these familiar faces again in The Matrix: Resurrections. Lana Wachowski, the director, and creator of this incredible saga has finally revealed to us the reason. She spoke as part of a panel on screenwriting at the International Literature Festival Berlin. There, she revealed that it was the loss of her parents that inspired her, saying:
My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely … You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard. My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story. And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life.

Lana Wachowski reveals that it was comforting for her to see the duo back in The Matrix: Resurrections

Wachowski then further revealed that having Neo and Trinity back in The Matrix: Resurrections made things comforting and simple for her. She continued:
It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super simple. You can look at it and say: ‘ok, these two people die and ok, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn’t that feel good.’ Yeah, it did! It’s simple, and this is what art does and that’s what stories do, they comfort us.
We’re glad to see Lana Wachowski using her own creation as a form of comfort. Meanwhile, her sister Lilly Wachowski who was also the co-creator and co-director of the original trilogy chose not to work on The Matrix: Resurrections. And this was because she did not want to revisit her painful past of losing her parents and her transition. It goes two show how two people can channel the same trauma in such a differing manner. The Matrix: Resurrections will hit the theatres on December 22, 2021.
