In honor of the Pride Month, Nickelodeon made some surprising yet essential announcements. Including two other characters, the network revealed that SpongeBob’s gay.
One of the longest-running animated show, SpongeBob SquarePants is still loved by all.
Originally, the show released in 1999 and is the fifth longest-running American animated show. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants overtook Pokemon in the very first week of its release. Since then, it is watched all over the world and has maintained incredible ratings. While the show has many interesting characters, mainly it revolves around SpongeBob SquarePants. He is overly enthusiastic and optimistic who lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary. His best friend, a starfish called Patrick is always up to help SpongeBob with his shenanigans. Since its release, everyone of all age groups watches it. From the quirky characters to an unusual setting, the show might just be the first taste of absurd for many kids. Now SpongeBob’s gay news is setting new examples of representation.
During Pride Month, Nickelodeon announced that SpongeBob’s gay.
Along with Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger and Korra from Avatar: The Last Airbender spin-off Legends of Korra, SpongeBob is part of the LGBTQ community as well. In a tweet, Nickelodeon revealed this news and wrote:
Celebrating Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month.’
After the news came out that SpongeBob’s gay, Twitterati responded and applauded the network. One Twitter user wrote:
2020 may be an unspeakable hell year so far, but hey, at least SpongeBob finally got to officially come out of the closet. I’m happy for him.
Meanwhile, others said that they always knew that he was gay. One user had evidence of this.
However, one person had a completely different description of SpongeBob’s sexuality.
nickelodeon just said spongebob is lgbtqia+. because spongebob was confirmed as asexual by the creator in 2005. and asexuals are lgbtqia+. yes, you can be gay and asexual, but also keep in mind that being lgbtqia+ doesn’t just mean same gender attraction.
Whatever his sexuality might be, there is no denying that SpongeBob is one of the most loved characters.
