Bill Maher Slams Celebrities trying to run for Office & get into Politics

There’s been a rise in the trend of celebrities running for public office in the United States. It started with Ronald Reagan, Arnold Swarchenegger, and eventually culminated in the rise of Donald Trump. And this trend is far from being over as multiple celebrities have disclosed their interest in getting into politics. These include Matthew McConaughey, Caitlyn Jenner, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. However, Bill Maher doesn’t think of this as an acceptable trend. He recently slammed these celebrities

Bill Maher on actors and celebrities running for office – he despises it

On the Real Time with Bill Maher, host Maher slammed these high profile names, saying their assumption that they have the qualifications to manage an entire state or country is erroneous. He said:

Someone must explain why celebrities running for office is a recurring nightmare we cannot seem to shake. The Rock, Caitlyn Jenner, Matthew McConaughey, Randy Quaid. They all have suggested lately that when it comes to running the country, they have what it takes. And they do: malignant narcissism.

Slamming both Jenner and McConaughey

For now, Jenner has already announced that she’ll be challenging Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California as a Republican. Furthermore, Quaid is also seriously considering joining the race for California. And both Johnson and McConaughey have flirted with the idea of running for the White House and Texas Governor respectively. About McConaughey, Maher said, referring to the actor’s memorable line from the 1993 film Dazed and Confused:

Matthew McConaughey is I’m sure a lovely person, but when he says he says he’s considering a run for governor in Texas, I must say that’s not alright, alright, alright.

Bill Maher criticized Jenner and her run for California governor. He said her experience in Keeping up with the Kardashians is not adequate for running the fifth largest economy of the United States.

I’m sure Caitlyn Jenner is a nice person, but as California governor, she would be in charge of the nation’s fifth-largest economy based on her qualifications of being a background character in a reality show not about her. Governing is a difficult, nuanced job with people’s lives and livelihoods at stake. Perhaps you’ve noticed that things in America have been a little different these last five months. That’s because there are people back in charge who spent their formative years not on a sound stage, but studying the stuff you need to know to be effective on the world stage.

Giving Trump’s example,

Furthermore, Bill Maher also gave Trump’s presidency as an example. He highlighted how his four years were just a disaster and not an inspiration. He said:

The last four years was a warning, not an inspiration. You were supposed to see that and think, ‘I guess high-level government jobs should go to people who have trained for it and know what they’re doing’.

Lastly, Bill Maher had a strong message for all celebrities who are contemplating entering politics using their clout. He said:

Let me put it bluntly to you and all of these would-be showbiz candidates. You’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough, and, doggone it, it completely doesn’t matter that people like you. They like you now because you’re an entertainer and thus largely uncontroversial. Governing is the opposite. If you think you can unite the country, you’re delusional.
