As you might be aware, The Crown just dropped a new season and it is all anyone can talk about. The new season of The Crown features Princess Diana and the events during that time period. The actress playing the role of Princess Diana is Emma Corrin.
Emma was invited as a guest on Tamron Hall to discuss her new role on The Crown’s fourth season. During their discussion, the host also asked her about reports that the royal family are not pleased with the way Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles was depicted in the series.
“It’s a difficult one,” Emma said about the particular situation. “I think for everyone in The Crown, we always try and remind everyone that the series that we’re in is fictionalized, to a great extent. Obviously, it has its roots in reality and in some fact, but Peter Morgan‘s scripts are works of fiction.”
Emma Corrin spoke about how it is valid for some viewers to have trouble accepting liberties that were taken with a narrative about a real-life personality who is as beloved as Diana is.
“At the same time, I understand why people would be upset because this is history,” Emma continued. “And even with Diana, it’s still very much fresh. I suppose—everything that happened. So I do really understand if people would be upset. We approach these people that we play as characters. Which is why it’s such a joyous job because Peter writes such rich and complex characters. And as an actor, it’s such a joy to really bring a lot to them.”
How Emma Corrin Felt About Playing Princess Diana
Emma had previously revealed that she found it daunting initially. The idea of her playing Prince William and Prince’s Harry mother scared her. However, Emma ultimately convinced herself that she would only be playing a character.
She thought of it as The Crown’s version of Diana. This perception changed things for her. Although, it does not remove any of the pressure or the responsibility she has. However, it did make the role overall manageable for her to play.
