Back To The Future Writer Responds To Marty McFly Fan theory

Even after 35 years, the hype around Back To The Future is not fading away. It’s impossible that fans will ever get over the adventures of Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown. But, that also means that fans will keep on discussing fan theories. However, the writers have finally debunked this one fan theory, and it is about Marty!

Did Eric Stoltz ever appear on-screen as Marty McFly in Back to the Future?

Wikimedia Commons | Universal Pictures ©To put this into context, fans know that Eric Stoltz was set to play Marty McFly in Back To The Future. However, he was fired from the show because he just wasn’t funny enough for the role, which wasn’t his fault at all. As a result, we got to see Michael J Fox play Marty and the rest, as we say, is history.

But, fans began theorizing that maybe Eric Stoltz did appear in the original film as Marty McFly! It could have been for a brief moment. A fan theory suggests that it was Stoltz’s hand that threw a punch on Biff Tannen in the diner. To find that out, The Hollywood Reporter got in touch with the writer Bob Gale to debunk this fan theory about Marty McFly. He said:

Editor Harry Keramidas, who cut the scene, pulled his notes, which show that the punch (by Marty on Biff) was reshot, but the printed takes were labeled ‘OK’ as opposed to ‘Good’. So that could still be Eric’s fist. I think the only way we would know for sure is to check the actual edge numbers on the negative. But, no one will risk damaging the negative by doing that. The workprint edge numbers might reveal the truth, but no idea if that even exists.

Well, it looks like there’s no way to prove that fan theory. But hold on, there could be another scene where Eric Stoltz appeared as Marty.

There may have been another scene

However, that’s not the only scene where Eric Stoltz may have appeared as Marty McFly. It s possible because before leaving, Stoltz did a lot of scenes for Back to the Future. The scene in question was in the skateboard chase, as Gale recalls:

After Marty jumps over the hedge, there’s a shot of him from behind approaching the pedestrians coming down the courthouse steps. It could be Eric, or it could be Per Welinder who did Fox’s skateboarding, or it could be Bob Schmelzer who was Eric’s skateboard double.

It looks like we may never get a definitive answer to this fan theory. But, fans are content with how Michael J Fox played Marty McFly in all the three Back to the Future films. Would Stoltz have had the same charm to him as Fox did? We’ll never know for sure. But one thing’s not going to change; our love for Back to the Future.
