Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are giant names in the tech world. Their innovations changed the course of humanity forever. However, they didn’t do it for free. In the process, they became one of the richest human beings to have ever lived. And with the recent Coronavirus outbreak, they decided to give donations for treatments. However, they’re getting a lot of stick for it. Let’s see why!
How much did Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates donate?
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, a wave of donations and charities have taken over the world. and it’s all for a good cause. Similarly, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg decided to give their input as well. They collectively decided to donate $25 million to fund research on possible Coronavirus treatments. Mark Zuckerberg, while talking to CBS this morning, said:
There are a lot of companies that I think can afford to take care of their people, and I think we have a responsibility to do that.
This all sounds rosy and perfect at first, but when put into perspective doesn’t mean a lot.
Now we agree that $25 million is a lot of money to donate to charity. However, Bill Gates has a net worth of $101 billion, with Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth at $62 billion. That’s a total of $163 billion. That’s more wealth than 153 entire countries! These are crazy numbers that are impossible to comprehend. And $25 million make up for hardly 0.016% of their total net worth. That’s peanuts for them, literally. And this did not go unnoticed on Twitter.
But of course, that was just the start.
Twitter reacts to their Coronavirus donations
As always, Twitter made a lot of fun of Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and billionaires in general. And of course, memes were involved!
And when toy brick manufacturers announced that they’re donating $50 million for Coronavirus charities, it got even more hilarious.
Moreover, considering how grave the situation is because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they need to do more!
Zuckerberg and Gates must do more!
The Coronavirus will have far-reaching implications on the economy and well-being of the lower-income class. This is a period of massive economic stagnation that will kill hundreds of thousands if the privileged elites do not step in. Moreover, they’ve access to a lot of opportunities, thanks to their influence and money. That helps them generate more wealth. Therefore, it’s only fair that they donate more generously for this cause. That’s why the world expects more of Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates! A major contribution from them can mean a quicker route to the vaccine.
