Joaquin Phoenix cares about what is happening to the climate and he is not afraid to show it as well. Not only did he speak about climate change during his acceptance speech at the 2020 Golden Globes, but he also marched alongside Jane Fonda to Washington D.C. Her Fire Drill Friday is for climate change awareness and has gathered support from a number of notable stars.
Joaquin Phoenix Joins Climate-Change Protest
On Fridays, Jane Fonda leads her Fire Drill Friday to raise awareness over climate change and urge the government to make necessary changes to their climate policies. This Friday, the Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix joined her including Susan Sarandon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Martin Sheen, and Amber Valletta and others.
The group also had support from locals who joined them in Washington D.C for the final rally. According to Fonda, Phoenix joined her on his own. On a microphone, he addressed the crowd:
“Something that oftentimes isn’t talked about in the environmental movement or in the conversation about climate change is that the meat and dairy industry is the third-leading cause of climate change. I think sometimes we wonder, ‘What can we do in this fight against climate change?’ And there is something you can do today, right now, and tomorrow by making a choice about what you consume.”
Phoenix added that he is struggling with what he can do as a star and as a person. He was aware that he flew on a plane, which itself is a great threat to the environment. However, he believes that he can change his eating habits to reduce or compensate. In the end, he asked everyone to join him in this cause.
This week’s protest was over “major banks and investors that finance fossil fuel exploration”. According to the Police, the 14th protest is was an unlawful demonstration activity in front of the U.S Capitol Building. According to CNN, 147 people were arrested due to this, whose list is not yet released. The people, along with Joaquin Phoenix face charges of crowding, obstructing and incommoding.
This was the final protest for the Fire Drill Fridays, after which Jane Fonda will return to Los Angeles for now.
