President Donald Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame Star was destroyed early Wednesday. According to the Los Angeles police, a man smashed it to pieces with a pickax and walked away leaving the tool right there.
Later, a witness informed that a man had been seen approaching the area as he had to tear up the ground. Naturally, she assumed that there must be some work going around. The police have arrested a suspect and placed a $20,000 bail on him. Austin Clay has been taken into custody by police on the suspicion of felony vandalism. The investigations are under process to find out the real reasons behind the alleged vandalism. The suspect was caught smashing the star in a surveillance video.
The Hollywood Historic Trust will get a team to repair the star. Until replaced properly, the star will remain covered for a few weeks. The cost of the repair has still not been estimated.
Tourists are taking pictures in front of the defaced star in the Hollywood and Highland center. The management is however seriously displeased. The CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce released a statement saying that the Walk of Fame was an institution to celebrate the positive contributions of the inductees. As far as destroying Trump’s star was concerned, Leron Gubler said that,
When people are unhappy with one of our honorees, we would hope that they would project their anger in more positive ways than to vandalize a California State landmark. Our democracy is based on respect for the law. People can make a difference by voting and not destroying public property.
This is not the first time that President Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star has been attacked. It has repeatedly been the target of protest from almost everyone- tourists to celebrities. Back in 2016, somebody tried to smash it in a similar way. But the person failed and was caught. He not just had to pay for repair but also spent time in probation and community service.
Comedian George Lopez even pretended to urinate on it while making a video. Not just him, but people sometimes let their dogs lose to relieve on it. Defacing it with paint and making obscene gestures has become fairly common.
Francisco Javier, a street performer present on the site talked about the treatment that Trump’s star receives. He shared that,
People often stomp with anger on the star, others kick their heels over the star, and some spit. The last time, someone put a sticker over the star.
It’s not only Donald Trump whose star has been attacked. A few years back, someone tried to do similar to Bill Cosby’s star after he was accused of sexual misconduct. Looks like it’s time that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce did something to increase security around the area.
