Best and Worst Dressed at MET Gala 2021
Although the pandemic deprived us of glamor and glitz, MET Gala 2021 is back with a bang. The theme is ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’. Like every year, celebrities, Hollywood actors, and social media stars glistened in designer wear. However, not all celebrities could make their mark. While some followed the theme to the t, others were just meh. Nonetheless, people cannot stop talking about the red carpet looks.
In order to pay homage to the American fashion, this year’s theme raises a serious question
After a year’s gap, MET Gala 2021 is bringing attention back to fashion. This year’s theme, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, is said to be the most ambitious one. Metropolitan Museum of Arts will be showcasing the exhibition in two parts. Their focus is to highlight all things made in America. At the same time, they want it to be inclusive and accepting. The exhibition will also focus on the essential question: who gets to be American? According to Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu Curator in charge:
American designers are at the forefront of conversations around diversity, inclusivity, sustainability, gender fluidity, and body positivity, and the framework of the show enables us to focus on the younger designers who are engaging thoughtfully and deeply with those ideas.
While the world watched anxiously, MET Gala 2021 red carpet lit up with stars
Despite the glimmer and sparkling stars, people had their favorites. The red carpet is divided into two: best dressed and worst dressed. Let’s take a look at both.
Normally, we see her in oversized, baggy clothes. However, for MET Gala 2021 red carpet, Billie Eilish stepped out of her comfort zone. With her blonde hair and golden era gown with a long trail, she looked like a modern-age Marilyn Monroe. Eilish wore a peach Oscar de la Renta gown.
Euphoria actor, Barbie Ferreira paid tribute to the 20s. Clad in a gown made from pearls, she looked like a dream. Her gorgeous outfit was by Jonathan Simkhai.
The legendary supermodel, Iman, looked breathtaking in Harris Reed’s outfit. From headpiece to feathered gown, everything about her outfit was the representation of the golden-age Hollywood glamor. At the same time, she looked like a queen of Vega showgirls.
In a voluminous yellow Valentino gown, Normani looked every bit a glamorous goddess. She showed us that less is more and how to let the dress speak for itself.
Helen Lasichanh and Pharrell Williams
If there is one couple who can rock matching outfits, it’s Pharrell and his wife. Similarly, they stood out with their cowboy-inspired leather outfits on MET Gala 2021 red carpet. Their matching outfits were from Chanel.
King had the most interesting outfit among all. Designer, Michael Kors converted an old Hollywood gangster pinstripe suit into a dress. With the shimmery coat, Regina King looked like a mafia queen.
Another outstanding outfit was Michaela Coel’s royal blue jumpsuit by Balenciaga. She looked like a living, breathing disco ball.
On MET Gala 2021 red carpet, Kendall Jenner recreated Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look from My Fair Lady. Her sparkling gown was from Givenchy.
Another best-dressed candidate was supermodel, Gigi Hadid, who paid homage to the iconic character, Jessica Rabbit. To compliment her Prada dress, she dyed her hair red as well.
Although she is a stunning girl, her Saint Laurent outfit did nothing for her. Rodrigo wore a net bodysuit with feather boa shoulders. Unfortunately, the focus only went to her underwear which she wore under the bodysuit.
As much as we love her, Jlo’s outfit was extremely unimpressive. Despite being a Ralph Lauren dress, it was completely meh. The color, the cowboy hat, the fur shrug, nothing worked. It was a total miss.
This model wore a white see-through gown embellished with stars, but the dress was gaudy and looked cheap. It felt like someone made her wear it at gunpoint.
Gossip Girl 2.0 star, Evan Mock made his debut in Thom Browne’s tuxedo shorts suit. However, he made things weird with a full-face leather mask. Also, what and why is this tuxedo shorts outfit?
Although she wore a Prada dress, it was a total miss. Reid made matters worse when she got rid of the pink fur skirt.
While her dress was not the problem, the accessories were. German singer made heads turn on MET Gala 2021 when she stepped on the red carpet with a huge horse dress around her neck. Nevertheless, it was a Collina Strada creation.
Another Kim who caught everyone’s attention was our very own Kardashian. From head to toe, she was wearing Balenciaga creation which was a black dress, with black tights, black gloves, and a black face mask. She did not show an inch of skin. Whether she wanted to take extra precautions for COVID-19 or just missing Kanye West, it’s hard to say. Nonetheless, this outfit should have its own category as it cannot be listed as best of worst.
This is ou take on the MET Gala 2021 red carpet looks, but do tell us in the comments what you think.
