After 13 years and quite an uproar, Britney Spears is almost free. Her father, Jamie Spears has filed papers to end the conservatorship in LA court. In the last two years, the singer tried twice to remove him from this position. Since 2008, he was the sole in-charge of her $60 million estate. According to Toxic singer’s statement, she had to face a lot of abuse during these years.
Since 2008, Womanizer singer has not been able to make personal and professional decision
After her public breakdown in 2008, her father put Britney Spears under a conservatorship. At the same time, she spends time in a psychiatric unit and mental hospital. Although it was supposed to be temporary, it lasted for 13 years. Until 2019, he made all the decisions involving her health, profession, business, and personal life. Britney Spears’s fans have expressed their concerns over the conservatorship. So much so, that they started a Free Britney Movement. In 2009, a website was launched which stated why the fans are not happy. It said:
During the twelve years of Spears’ conservatorship she has repeatedly toured the world, released multiple albums, and worked on a variety of television shows. Her conservators decide whether or not she works, as she cannot enter into contracts for herself because she is legally not her own person. Britney Spears needs permission from her conservators to leave her house or spend any of her own money.
In July this year, Britney Spears decided to take matters in her hands
During a court hearing, she shared all the abuse she had to face since 2008. According to her, she was drugged, forced to perform and record albums, as well as prevented from having more children. According to Baby One More Time singer, her relationship with her father is abusive and controlling. At the same time, Britney Spears shared that she was not aware that she could file a petition against it. Shortly after, she appointed a new lawyer and got to work. In a social media post, she also announced that there will be no more tours until her father steps down from the conservatorship. While sharing her decision, Britney Spears said:
This conservatorship killed my dreams. So all I have is hope.
After years, Jamie Spears have filed papers to end the conversatorship
When he knew he could no longer stop Britney Spears, her father decided to step down. After two months of her explosive statement in court, he has filed papers to end the conservatorship. The statement given by Jamie Spears states:
Recent events related to this conservatorship have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist. Ms Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance.
With this monumental step, Britney Spears will finally be free and able to make decisions for herself. Hopefully, she will find peace at last.
