Sade Releases New Song, ‘The Big Unknown’
From the soundtrack for Steve McQueen’s upcoming film, Widows.
The English band, Sade released a new song yesterday, titled ‘The Big Unknown’. The upcoming new film, ‘Widows’ will feature the song. ‘Widows’ is a Steve McQueen-directed mystery film, depicting a heist story. The movie will hit theaters Nov. 16.
Sade’s music usually features elements of soul, quiet storm, smooth jazz, and sophisti-pop (sub-genre of pop music). She released the new song titled ‘The Big Unknown’ late Friday night (Nov. 9). The single was first announced in August, and will reportedly be played during the film’s end credits. Moreover, a lyric video of the song was also posted on YouTube.
Starring Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya, and Robert Duvall, the film ‘Widows’ is an adaptation of the UK crime series of the same name. The soundtrack will also feature a track by Hans Zimmer, as well as cuts from Nina Simone and The Cool Kids. CD copies of the soundtrack will be out November 30, and vinyl copies, via Milan Records, on December 28.
Steve McQueen Talks About Sade
“It was an honor to work with such a legend”, Steve McQueen shared in a press release about Sade’s new song. He continued:
“Sade is an incomparable talent and incredible artist who so rarely releases new material, but luckily the original series of Widows had deeply resonated with her.”
Lyrics of ‘The Big Unknown’
According to a press release, the director talked to Sade about the movie, asking her to write a song about ‘loss and survival’.
In the song, Sade delivers her trademark smoky vocals. She sings empowering lyrics like:
“I won’t surrender to this hard hearted night.”
Previously this year, Sade also released the song ‘Flower of the Universe’. She recorded the song for the recent Ava DuVernay adaptation of ‘A Wrinkle in Time’. DuVernay personally requested it as part of a standout soundtrack featuring songs by Sia, Kehlani, Demi Lovato, and more.
