After she won her first Grammy for Cuz I Love You, Lizzo took a break for 2 years. However, she is back with a bang with her single Rumors. For this song, Truth Hurts singer got Cardi B on board. This is the first-ever collaboration of the two stars. Throughout the video, Lizzo is seen dressed as a Greek goddess, walking through her empire and singing about her accomplishments. Similarly, Cardi B also appears as a Greek goddess, sitting on her throne. At the end of the video, Lizzo and Cardi B come together for an epic dance.

However, the success of the song did not stop the haters from spreading negativity.

Only a couple of days after Rumors, Lizzo made a tearful video on Instagram. In the emotional video, she addressed the hateful, racist, and fatphobic comments made towards her. Specifically, she talked about people targeting plus-size Black women. While wiping her tears, Lizzo said:

It’s fatphobic, it’s racist, and it’s hurtful. What I won’t accept is y’all doing this to Black women over and over and over again. Especially us big Black girls. When we don’t fit into the box that you want to put us in, you just unleash hatred onto us. It’s not cool. I’m doing this s— for the big Black women in the future who just want to live their lives without being scrutinized or put into boxes.

Furthermore, she said:

I’m not making music for anybody. I’m a Black woman making music. I make Black music, period. I’m not serving anyone but myself. Everyone is invited to a Lizzo show, to a Lizzo song.

Lizzo also said that it is really hard to love yourself in a world that does not love you back and it takes a lot to courage to do that.

When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.

At the same time, she shut down the haters by sharing the ratings of Rumors.

Oscar-winning actress, Octavia Spencer also showed her support and said:

You’re loved everyday. Never seek approval from the world because there will always be those waiting to tear you down. Self love is foundational and only you can build it.

TikToker-turned-singer, Bella Poarch expressed her sorrow on how the internet brings down such exemplary role models. She also said that greatness is hardly ever appreciated until it’s gone.

The Good Place star, Jameela Jamil shared a series of tweets and said:

Lizzo makes a song about people spending energy trying to bring women down. Twitter erupts in abuse about her talent and mostly her appearance, and then she cries on IG live while addressing how damaging this culture is, and she gets made fun of for crying. This is so fucked up.

Despite the hate, Lizzo always gets back up and makes banger music like Rumors. At the moment, she’s working on her next album which might feature Harry Styles.
