For What If…? series, the casting had many Marvel stars back for their roles and multiple new additions.
As we all know, Marvel stars who play the beloved superheroes are special for the fans. Therefore, the fans expect the same stars to come back for these characters. Similarly, almost all of the original cast members reprised their respective characters. Consequently, What If…? cast includes Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson. Jeremy Renner and Sebastian Stan. At the same time, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Bettany, and the majority of the stars will return.
However, many Marvel stars are missing from the action.
At least, seven Marvel stars are not returning in the animated series. It includes Chris Evans, Robert Downery Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, Benicio del Toro, and Seth Green. While their exclusion might upset their fans, the director has an explanation. According to Bryan Andrews:
All of these people are extremely talented and they’ve got a lot of stuff going on. We figured we probably wouldn’t be able to get everybody – but we got a lot, and that was great. So yeah, it’d be awesome to have everybody, but you’ve got to deal with what you’ve got to deal with. And if someone’s too busy and they can’t make it, it’s a bummer.
Furthermore, he said:
We had a certain degree of freedom. Schedules are crazy, so it’s really hard to get everybody. Butthe ones we had come in to take over did a fantastic job.
Although this explanation is valid, it’s a possibility that they wanted a different cast from the start. When a fan asked Dave Bautista about his exclusion, he made it clear that no one asked him to return.
While there is no question that the original cast will be missed, it is interesting to bring in new actors. Just like the premises of What if…?, the fans get to see alternative cast in the show.
