After the uproar caused by Britney Spears and her bombshell court hearing, her father Jamie Spears resigns from the conservatorship of his daughter. After being at the helm of the conservatorship since 2008, which the court mandated after her public mental breakdown, he has finally succumbed to public pressure. This decision comes following the massive public pressure mounted by the Free Britney Campaign after Britney Spears revealed the horrors of her legal arrangement.
Jamie Spears resigns as conservator of Britney Spears
During the court hearing, Britney Spears revealed that she wanted to “press charges” against her father for “conservatorship abuse”. Last month in the court hearing, Britney told Judge Brenda Penny:
Instead of trying to investigate my behavior or my capacity, I want my dad investigated. This conservatorship is literally allowing my dad to rule my life … that is abuse, and we all know it.
She wanted to see her father behind bars, and as a result, this decision comes as a huge victory for her. Her new attorney, Mathew Rosengart, believes the same as well. Moreover, her legal team wants there to be an investigation of the 13-year-long conservatorship for abuse.
Now, Jamie Spears finally responded to his daughter’s petition in Los Angeles Superior Court with his resignation. Moreover, he assured the court he would assist them in the transition. But, he did not provide them with a timetable for his departure. In the documents, the reason he gave for the resignation was the “public battle with his daughter”. He also mentioned in his court documents that he needs to attend to some urgent matters, writing:
When these matters are resolved, Mr Spears will be in a position to step aside. But there are no urgent circumstances justifying Mr Spears’ immediate suspension.
Jamie Spears insists there were no legal grounds to forcibly remove him
Despite that, Jamie Spears states that there are no grounds to actually remove him from the conservatorship. In the court documents, he wrote:
There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr Spears as the Conservator of the Estate. … And it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms Spears’ best interests. Nevertheless, even as Mr Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests. So even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.
Britney Spears attorney is celebrating this is a huge victory
On the other hand, the Britney Spears camp is jubilant over this decision. The pop star’s attorney Rosengart did not shy away from expressing his and his client’s happiness. In a statement, he said:
This is a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice. I announced in Court on July 14 that, after 13 years of the status quo, it was time for Mr. Spears to be suspended or removed as conservator and that my firm and I would move aggressively and expeditiously for that outcome. Twelve days later, my firm filed a Petition for Mr. Spears’s suspension and removal based on strong, insurmountable legal grounds, which were unequivocally supported by the law and all parties involved, including Jodi Montgomery, Britney Spears, and her medical team.
Despite this decision, Britney Spears and her legal aides are not happy that Jamie Spears is still resorting to attacks. He said:
In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr Spears should remain silent and step aside immediately.
Lastly, Rosengart made it clear that he will be investigating the 13 years of the conservatorship under Jamie Spears. His resignation does not mean that he will get the chance to evade accountability, and Britney Spears’ lawyer said:
We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.
